Prime wifi Issues?

Since wifi range was one of the main reasons for the delayed release of the Transformer Prime, i'm curious about peoples' experiences regarding the wifi range and reliability.

This guy seemed to think it wasn't all that bad if I remember correctly...

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime Review - YouTube

He says that the first 2 he got were significantly worse and terrible.. but the latest one he has is the version that we should be getting and its fine. Also a good review if you haven't seen it. Very honest!

Actually, In other reviews I have read, it was stated that wifi range was very bad... for that reason it would very nice to know if this wifi issue is a hardware problem or this a software thing that will fixed with a software update... Have ASUS said anything about this??

In the part II review of the third Prime, Anandtech did NOT say it was fine and stated it is significantly weaker than the Transformer 1, since Asus did not use a plastic window for the wifi on the Prime (it is all metal). The Acer 500 has the same metal design and has awful wifi range.

To be honest, I am starting to consider if buying this tablet or not... Unless until Asus says something regarding this issue.
A decent Wifi range is critical in my case and I don't feel like paying 550€ for a device that outperforms at this respect...

First, reading the reviews it appears as though ASUS has fixed the problem (maybe the 2nd Antenna) but there probably are some of the first batch still out there which could be causing problems. This probably means the later you get your copy the more likely it is that the WiFi fix will be in there.

Second, the browser issue will probably be repaired in ICS. There is a video on this site about the Tegra 3 and it processor technology. To sum it up the processor has 4 Power Cores and 1 Companion (lower power) core. The UI stuff seems to be done in the companion core and when something needs to be launched and setup it uses the Power cores then switches back to the companion core after everything is launched. When I saw that I wondered how much of that switch is handled in hardware and how much in software. Since one of the criticisms of Honeycomb is how it really does not use the multi-core that well I wonder how much of this performance glitch we are seeing is Honeycomb related and how much will be fixed in ICS.

I think I am going to get the 32GB TF101 from BestBuy with their return by 1/24/2011 policy and see what plays out with the Prime during that timeframe. I like the form factor of the Prime but since I am not a game player and WiFi and Browser performance are much more important to me. I was considering the TF101 before I found the Prime and had been going back and forth on it but the Tegra 2 is probably just fine for me for what I will be doing.

Just got my Prime today! I've been playing with it for about an hour now and the wifi seems to be just fine. The web pages load quite fast and I can't find any complaints yet. This thing is awesome. Hope you all have the same satisfaction as I do when you get yours.

^ Would you mind checking your GPS? Over at the XDA forums, they have a poll going on. Out of the 10 people who have voted in the poll, so far, 7 of them claim they cannot get a lock on GPS...

Yep, gps is definitely lacking in accuracy. Says I'm at least 5 miles away from my actual location.

Anandtech has the best reviews. One thing for certain is we won't really know what this beast is capable of until it gets ICS

Got my Prime last Friday. I definitely notice a weaker signal on the Prime than I do on other wireless devices throughout the house (2 W7 laptops, 2 touchs, 1 HTC Incredible). I can be standing within 10 feet of my dual band wireless N router with line of site and still not get a full signal. There is something wrong, you may be able to live with it depending on your situation. Whether Asus owns up to this problem and does something about it is the question... still debating if I return this to BB or not, I have 45 days being a premier member. Hoping Asus addresses the problem before then...

Thanks for your feedback mathew... The thing is that this wifi issue seems to be more a hardware problem than a software thing, so I am not sure what could Asus do at this respect (apart from replacing all the devices that has been delivered to the market, and redesign the tablet again...).

One thing is for sure, the wifi range in a device like this, is a critical factor, so something must be done asap.

Maybe they can try turning up the power to boost rx/tx? Although that would decrease battery life. I read somewhere else an option could be swapping out units with the issue if it was a production problem with the first batch?

This sucks. I want to keep this tablet. I really do. They're just making it so hard to justify it. The GPS issue stinks, but I really don't care about GPS on a tablet, so I'm fine with that. The WIFI, on the other hand, is very important. I was in denial that there was really an issue with it, as general browsing in my small apartment is fine, but I got around to doing some tests today, and I am not pleased.

Using the speedtest.net app, I consistently get about 15-20 Mbps on my iPad1, 8-15 Mbps on my Galaxy Nexus, and about 3-5 Mbps on my Transformer Prime. Yuck.

In addition to that, I tested by transferring a large file over my home network from my PC to my devices using FTP, and it peaked at about 4 Mbps on the Transformer Prime and hit 8 Mbps on my Galaxy Nexus. YUCK.

I'm going to try and get to a buddy's house today to do some distance tests, and I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be pleased with the results.

I really do love everything else about this tablet, but this just really sucks. What good is a tablet with crappy wifi?

Thanks for your feedback nyijedi... it's pretty clear that there is a wifi problem with the Prime... What I don't understand is why Asus keeps ignoring this problem instead of saying, "ok, there is a situation with our product and we will do our best to find a solution asap"...
Big problem here I guess is that these issue seems to be a hardware failure, and therefore the only solution should be replacing all the tablets currently sent to the market and doing a redesign of the product...

It is odd because the problem seems inconsistent. Sometimes is works fine, like right now with it in my lap and browsing, I have a full signal. But when I hold it, the issue seems to appear. That would seem to indicate some type of HW issue with antenna and how it is setup.

I've gotta agree with you, srmathew - the wifi problem is inconsistent. As the days go by, I am noticing at times my signal is dropping to ONE bar - in the same EXACT area where it had been THREE bars just the night before - the router was not moved, the tablet was not moved, and it was laying on a pillow both times, not in my lap or in my hands. I don't really understand it, actually.

The wifi seems to be fine at some points and then crummy for a little while, eventually going back to being decent again - it's an endless cycle.

Jonneh- absolutely there is an issue. Very inconsistent issue. What's more - I can't seem to zone in on the issue.
I did a hard reset about 3 hours ago - Still using stock browser.
My wifi has fluctuated from 1 bar to 3 bars - and the router is less than 10 feet from me.
What's even MORE concerning - is BT with WIFI.
I connected Apple BT keyboard - works fine.
But i start to see inconsistentcies here and there. I will be typing, and then it lags, and then the wifi drops from 3 to 1.
And then this is the kicker!!!!
If i connect my Android 3.0+ mouse (Logitech VX470) and the Apple BT keyboard - my internet DISCONNECTS. The wifi signal drops to -0 db !!! I kid you not. Then I try to reconnect and mouse won't connect, or if it does, it goes off while I move the mouse around the screen.
This is a terrible problem, and I have been a strong Asus supporter since the Eee PC 7".
I am in the BCO serial lot (I'm guessing this is first batch???)
If anyone has any of these other BT problems with Wifi please let me know - choose any BT keyboard and BT mouse. I am very disappointed and I want to love this soooo much but when my SGS2 (E4GT) can use a BT mouse and BT Keyboard and scroll in dolphin or stock faster than this (and I paid 1 penny for it) it gets me upset.
Power saving mode is set to Normal
Wifi is set to never turn off

ASUS eeePC 7" was my first ASUS product as well! haha. I upgraded the ram with 1GB but it was still rather slow lol. But the portable size was incredible...Felt like I could use it as a frisbee if it were a little lighter.

Anyway, fortunately I haven't tried connecting a BT mouse or BT keyboard yet. But I have them from my atrix...maybe I'll test them soon. Sounds like we would both have the same experience though since we're both having the wifi issue.
You can try going for a replacement, but it's a toss-up if you're going to get one with better wifi, but perhaps a different issue such as a non-responsive screen or toasted GPS signal or something. Or, go for a full refund, I suppose.. You may be happier with something else, sadly. :-|
