Priority Notifications for individual contacts?

A few of the Android 5.0 reviews I've read, including the one here, mention Priority Notifications for specific contacts but I don't see how to set that up. I've only been able to setup app-based priority notifications. Is this a phone specific option? I'm using a Nexus 5.

sounds and notifications in settings and then interruptions. though I'm having some issues with it actually muting certain notifications i.e. textra (sms ) is still making an alert despite me telling interruptions to alert me to nothing but calls off my starred contacts

Ok after seeing you refer to starred contacts I think I see how to do this now.

If i star a contact and turn priority interruptions on for messages, does that mean that I will only be alerted to SMS messages from that contact or does messages also apply to Whatsapp or any other app associated with that contact's number? What if the contact has a Skype or other IM account added to their contact info?

Just tried testing the starred contacts only option and I'm having the same issue except with calls. When in priority mode with starred contacts only selected all calls are ringing through.
