Verizon Galaxy S8 Problem checking voicemail using Google Voice app

I have set up my voicemail so that I can check it in the Google voice app. It used to work fine. However now when I play a voicemail and hold the phone up to my ear, the screen shuts off and the voicemail stops playing. Is there any way to fix this behavior?

Probably a glitch in how Samsung implemented some part of Google VM or the proximity detector, so that they're interacting. Until they issue an update that fixes the problem (write to them, so they're aware of it - but remember, they're slow with the updates), use the speaker to listen to your Google voicemails.
