Problem with flip cover and strong sunlight

I upgraded to Android 6.0.1 and have now the problem when opening the flip cover that the screen does not turn on. This is happening only in full sunlight. Does anyone knows a workaround to this ?

The device is a Samsung S5 mini with flip cover.

Since this is more likely to be a device-specific question, rather than a Marshmallow question, I'll move it to the S5 mini forum.

Is the display set to Automatic Brightness? Of course, that should make the screen brighter in bright sunlight, rather than dimmer, but I'm wondering if something with the ambient light sensor is malfunctioning.
