Problem with Messages backing out

I had to do the Pie update this month, what a pain. The most annoying change is at random times, the Messages app will back out to the main list of messages, and save the draft. It's done it when I'm reading a text, looking at a pic from a text thread, and most annoyingly, in the middle of typing a text. The previous texting app was flawless, never a problem. Any suggestions?
