Problem with touch-drag latency or sampling

I bought a pair of Galaxy Tab A (8 in), new, from Costco. First was bought a few months ago, second a couple of days ago. Both are running Android 10, both report same manufacturing location (China) and year (2019).

The issue:

One and only one of them has an odd performance problem that I almost-remember reading about somewhere a while back, maybe regarding an optimization or something related. I'm hoping someone else might remember same or know the solution.

System caches have been flushed. Any other apps are shared on both. Restarts, "optimize", etc., it's all been done. In Developer options, I enabled "Pointer Location" to demonstrate what's happening. Please see pics.

On both tablets, I performed a simple slow touch then swipe right to left. The result is completely repeatable and consistent, so it's not a variation in my touch. The first pic, from the first purchase, shows a steady almost continuous red line made from dots indicating the motion and sampling thereof. The second pic, from the second purchase, shows the problem clearly: the touch is met with a low sampling rate period that then "ramps up" to match what it should be (and is on the other tablet). I am guessing this is some sort of optimization, but who knows. Apparently the hardware and software (assuming no defects) are not the issue, as the tablets are otherwise identical. So maybe it's a setting that can be changed.

This performance issue shows readily in anything from scrolling home pages (I did try tweaking the suggested options regarding this; it had no benefit) up to Minecraft -- which otherwise runs great, but when press-and-holding to mine, then turning to move to another block, the second tablet chugs like no one's business.

Sorry about posting pics this way; this particular form didn't appear to support any other method.

Hi, thanks. At present, that's not something I'm able to do. However, the pics do show what's happening (make sure you're viewing at full size): in the first, the line of red dots is continuous, high rate, no interruption. In the second, the dots (moving right to left, constant speed) start out spaced far apart, suggesting they are being read or sampled at a very low rate, almost like an optimization maybe trying to save battery power or avoid errant clicks. As I drag left over the course of a second or two, the dots increase in frequency, until finally, they become a steady red line like the dots in the first pic/first tablet. Here are two zoomed-in and annotated crops. Those early low sampled bits make a huge difference in usability of the tablet.

Power saving on both tablets is set to "Optimized - Get the recommended balance of performance and battery life."
The alternatives (not selected) are Medium and Maximum, so I'd have to assume Optimized is as close as I can get to a setting of "Off."

Adaptive Power saving is also turned off on both tablets.

Also note that this is happening right on the home screen, not necessarily within any app.

So that tells me it's with the OS , have you tried high performance mode and I believe you can tweak it ?

I'm not aware of high performance mode; where do I find that?

If you're referring to the "maximum" I mentioned above, that was "maximum power saving," sorry for any confusion.

Both tablets have 32GB+32GB (mostly empty as they are new) storage. Memory is 2GB. Note that the problem persists on the second tablet even after "device care" optimize process is at 100/100.

Welcome to the forums. A couple of long shots. Are you using a screen protector in the device that is having the issue? Confirm in the settings that you have the same value in both tablets for 'Touch/Tap & Hold Delay'.

Yeah this a under powered tablet , can also try place it in safe mode see if you expirence same issue

Edit: also the one having the issue have a screen protector?

Welcome to Android Central! Does it also happen in Safe Mode? You won't be able to use that touch testing app, but you should still be able to see any difference. If the problem still occurs in Safe Mode, then I'd just bring it back to Costco and ask for an exchange.

I really appreciate all of these replies.

To the answers:
-No screen protector
-Touch and hold delay same for both, .5 sec
-Problem persists in safe mode

Today I will perform a factory reset and if it continues (I believe it will), this pup's going back to Costco. I'll report back about its replacement (hopefully with good news). Thanks all!

Ok sounds good

Back for a brief follow-up / conclusion.

I waited and waited for Costco to get a new shipment of these for the sake of conducting a replacement (in fact, I took mine back to replace it but they had none in stock), but time has finally run out. They're simply not selling them anymore. They now have an updated model that costs almost twice as much so I've opted to keep the one I've got and deal with the annoyance.

What an eye opener this experience has been, to come to the realization that two of the same item from a huge corporation can in fact be so different, probably boiling down to the use of cheaper parts at one assembly plant. Disappointing.

Thanks for the follow-up:(
