Problem with Usb-c headphone adapter

USB C adapter for audio out having a big problem working consistently. I have to unplug it and replug it anywhere from 5 to 20 times for it to eventually play through my auxiliary input in my car. It just keeps playing through my phone speakers. I heard that possibly some programs hijack the system, this is happening with TuneIn Radio, I don't have any songs downloaded that I can test it with . The charging cable works fine everytime, but the headphone adapter is hit-or-miss, anybody else having problems like that?
