Problems with "Android File Transfer"

K, i've been having an intermittant issue with the "Android Files Transfer" program. When I try to use it, sometimes it works, and sometimes I get an error. Right now, all I get are errors.

I used to have a RAZR, which let me easily load music and files on from my Mac. Device showed up as a removable drive, i could drag and drop music or other files easily.

With the S3, i can't. So I've been using Android Files Transfer, in Camera mode (which is odd, but if I do media it won't do anything).

So that used to work (sometimes), but now I'm consistently being told "Can't access device storage. If your screen is locked, disconnect device, unlock the screen, and reinsert the cable". I can do that all day till sundown, but I get the exact same error. Sometimes it will register the file structure on the device, but when I try to move, it craps out and closes.

Anyone else having a similar issue? Any tips how to fix? I'm resorting to uploading things to Google Cloud or Amazon cloud to move things, but that's silly when the device is sitting next to my computer. :)

Well, a couple of things that you don't mention:
1. Are these files on your phones' internal storage (/mnt/sdcard) or on an actual micro SDcard (/mnt/extSdCard)?
2. If on the latter, is it formatted as FAT32 or ext3 (the default)?
3. If the latter, you might try reformatting as FAT32 - there have been scattered reports of access/corruption issues with large numbers of files on the micro SDCard when it's formatted as ext3 which go away when it's formatted as FAT32.
Finally, the SGSIII uses MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) for direct connection, unlike older devices which allowed you to mount the phone storage as USB devices. This seems to present its own set of challenges.
You may want to try any of a large number of apps that are available for free that will allow you to use a WiFi connection to transfer files between your MAC and your phone.

Thanks for the reply!

1.) I was moving things to the actual phone memory, vs my card. My card does have alot of music on it already, and it's pretty much full. Actually, i was never even able to move things to my external SD card with Android File Transfer (the solution I finally used does let me though).

2.) I tried iSyncr (which kept having an issue on my Mac, it would force quit itself with a long error string...i'm working with the developer on how to correct)

3.) I finally used AirDroid last night, and it worked like a charm over Wifi, and was very quick to boot. Also gave me access to both the external SD Card, and the internal memory (which Android File Transfer didn't....or I missed it)

Just seemed like an awful lot of effort to get tunes on my phone....my old RAZR had no problems showing up as a removeable drive that I could interact with. I love my S3, but if I'd known what a problem I'd have using it with my Mac, I might have thought twice about it and waited for the RAZR HD. But I'm glad I didnt! :)
