Project Fi in Wyoming

When I was looking into getting Project Fi myself I couldn't find anything on people's experiences with the service in Wyoming, so I'm going to try to give a little information.

I've been on Project Fi for about 4 days now in Cheyenne. Early impressions have been very good. I'm on wi-fi most of the time (>90% of the time) so I haven't had to you data very often on the Fi network. When I have had to use it I've gotten very acceptable speeds on LTE. It's not as fast as my Verizon LTE was, but it's fast enough to pull up websites, videos, stream music, and use apps like Yelp and Flixster. I did get kicked down to 3G speeds in a few stores, but that happened with Verizon, too. (Big concrete boxes aren't conducive to cell reception.)

Switching between wi-fi calling and cellular coverage has really impressed me. When I'm on the call and leave the house I never hear a blip in the conversation, and the party on the other end of the line doesn't either. I haven't noticed how many open wi-fi networks I've been connecting to, but I've never noticed calls being dropped or had issues sending or receiving text messages. One pleasant surprise is that ALL of my texts now show up in hangouts in Chrome. I also get incoming call notices before they show up on my phone. This is a nice feature for me, as I spend my weekdays at a desk with my phone on silent.

I ordered a Nexus 6P through Google when I signed up for Project Fi, and it was pretty painless. I used my 6P with my Verizon SIM for a few days and it worked like a charm. When I popped the Fi SIM in and ported the number it took roughly 12 hours for me to be able to receive incoming calls, but I was able to make outgoing calls immediately. My Verizon service was automatically cancelled after the number was ported.

So far I've been very pleased. I'll continue to post updates here as I notice things like open wi-fi networks and any issues I run into.

Thanks for the post! As a person who travels everywhere for work I had some concerns about places in the coverage gaps on their map. It was a big help when contacting Project Fi as they told me to enable data roaming and that it is just added at the normal data rate.

Update: After using the service for 1 month I can say that I'm VERY pleased with it. I signed up for the 2 GB plan, but only used 0.99, so I got a $10.10 credit on this month's statement. My fiance was so impressed with my service that she's dropping Verizon and her iPhone for a 5X and Project Fi.

Driving around the area in the past month I have noticed that when Sprint and T-Mobile are not available (which is pretty much everywhere outside of the Cheyenne city limits) the service will connect me with whatever tower is available, which is Verizon more often than not. It's nice to know that Verizon is an option for voice and text. I only get 3G data speeds when I'm hooked up to their towers, but that's not a big deal to me. It's usually only when I'm driving down the road, and 3G is plenty fast to run navigation or look up a phone number if I need to.

I've been noticing open wi-fi networks more and more lately, too. My phone will hook up to quite a few of them with a VPN around town. I've also never really been aware of the open networks in the stores I use, but have made sure that I hook up to them manually if I haven't before.

Project Fi has exceeded my expectations thus far. There has been a slight drop off in voice service, but not enough to effect my day-to-day life. I would highly recommend it to anyone in Cheyenne!

Thank you for your post. After reading it I decided to get Google Project Fi service in Wyoming. So far I LOVE it when I am in Cheyenne, Casper or when I am on Wi-Fi. However, I seem to been having a different experience than you when I am traveling.

I get great phone service in Wyoming, but I do not get any data service or SMS text service AT ALL ANYWHERE in Wyoming except Cheyenne and a small part of Casper. I have been working with Google support and they said that is normal, but it doesn't sound like it would be normal to me. We are talking almost the entire state of Wyoming with no data service at all. You sound like you get service on the road but you said it is Verizon and Google said they do not partner with Verizon in Wyoming so you should not be getting your signal from them.

Do you get a data connection anywhere between Cheyenne and Casper?

If you happen to get the time and are so inclined, there is an app called signal meter light that will tell you which cell phone tower/service you are on. If you do get data service, perhaps you could check and see what service you are getting when you are on the road.

Thanks again for the post!
