I want to root and install 2.5.2. I need to upgrade my radio first, so it appears you use the file PB31IMG.ZIP. I understand the steps. This is a stock 2.2 ROM, correct? If I do this, will I lose all my settings, emails and SMS? I wanted to create a back up of my phone as it sits now on 2.1. Do I have to root first to do that, then backup using nandroid, then install the above file? This is the step that really confuses me. Do I need to use titanium and back up my apps and settings. I really need clarificatin here. Thanks,

root
create nandroid
use a program like titanium backup, or my back up pro to save your apps, settings, sms, bookmarks, etc.
use PB31img.zip to go back to stock 2.1
Flash your radio
reroot and flash the rom of your choice.

Thank you, that is what I assumed. So, based on this, is your backup only good for when you are rooted? If you return to stock , is there a way to load the titanium back up?

Yes the nandroid backup you create will have root with it.

If you have to go back to stock for any reason I don't know if there is a way to retrieve your data through the app titanium backup. I think my backup pro might let you but I'm not sure because I haven't tried going back stock except to flash my radio.

I would think it should work fine since all the TB info is stored on the SD card. You would just have to download TB from the Market again and run a batch, right?

I haven't tried to run Titanium Backup on an unrooted phone. Will that work?

I wish I could say for sure but I am still learning, too! Just seems like it should though since the info is stored on the SD card and not the phone internal memory. But I could be totally wrong!

pretty sure t-backup needs root itself.

Yes titanium backup is for root users only.

SR 2.5.2 is indeed a Froyo 2.2 ROM, far from Stock however. You will lose all your settings because 2.1 and 2.2 are totally different beasts. Emails will be re-synced with Gmail etc. You will lose SMS unless you are synced with Gtalk etc. To be able to make a backup of your phone you will have to be rooted and boot into clockworkmod recovery and create a nandroid recovery point. However this backup won't serve you much good unless you unRevoke Forever your phone because you can't run a 2.2 radio with a 2.1 ROM. Titanium backup works great going from 2.1 to 2.1. However when you try to restore your 2.1 settings, configs, and apps into a 2.2 installation you are going to create more headaches than they are worth. I would suggest simply starting over for ease reason. If your setup you have now is that important I would stay away from rooting, flashing, and changing things around.
