Proximity sensor active all the time

Hey so u noticed today that whenever my hand goes over the sensor whether I'm on a phone call or not the screen turns off.. I'll be pulling down the notification bar and my finger waving past the sensor will turn off the screen..

Never experienced that before... Is there a setting for the sensor?

Could it be Smart Stay instead? Maybe by blocking the front-facing camera, the phone can't see your eyes, and therefore thinks you're looking away (and then shuts off the screen).
