Proximity sensor malfunction on Essential Phone

Black screen as soon as I make or accept a call. Android fix not available, cannot access Call settings not available; only solution I can come up with is to disable proximity sensor, just need help doing it. Any help is emmensly appreciated!!

Welcome to Android Central! Do you have a screen protector on? If so, does the problem persist after taking it off?

Or is it in a case that even partially covers the top of the screen? (The proximity detector is light-driven, so even dirt on the protector or the screen could keep it from functioning properly.)
