Proximty sensor gone crazy

My screen goes off every time my hand goes over my proximity sensor. Doesn't matter what app I'm using. I have had my note 2 since November and this just started happening. Any advise would be helpful.

the sensor is shutting off the display as it was intended. it must have been turned off before if it is behaving differently

I thought it was only supposed to happen when on the phone so when holding phone to ear you don't press any buttons.

It was happening when using browser or playing poker or playing word feud.

I rebooted and it seems to have stopped.
