Until there is more information, no non-nexus cables in nexus chargers.

Here's a video explaining the issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMPrM0eWPbY

A summary is that the Nexus chargers (that come in the box with the phones) will supply power to anything connected to the other end, not only things that identify themselves as devices that need to be charged by that charger. This impacts almost all cables on the 5X and "smart" cables on the 6P. The 22.5W one that you can by from the google store here: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e.../store.google.com/us/?hl=en-US&token=hzncmqmh does not contain this issue.

I don't know if there are people that use third party cables with their OEM wall chargers, but if you do, don't do that with the Nexus 6P and 5X chargers.

Damn good info.
Thanks. :)

WOW!

Re: PSA: Do not use non nexus cables with nexus 2015 chagers

To clarify, USB-IF 3.1 type C gen2 "smart" cords are the cables having issues with the 6P. Almost everything else is fine with the 6P charger (so far). The 5X seems to have this issue with almost all third party cables.

Do people really mix and match cables with the OEM charging blocks? Didn't realize that was a thing.

I recently moved my C to C cord from Google to my PC, and left it there. The motherboard offers power even when the PC is off, so this worked out for me.

I have seen a couple of people do it (including people that I know), but I never have.

That's scary though.

Yeah, not a good thing.

Is this compliant? lol.

My Dash charger won't charge anything but my One Plus Three!

It is not; no. Prior to the USB-IF 3.1 type C gen2 "smart" cords the 6P issue would be difficult to detect and since that standard didn't exist, it's sorta feasible that Huawei didn't know that standard was coming - but Google sure as hell did know and should have been giving some guidance and testing. The Nexus 5X one from LG is much worse than the 6P and shouldn't even be in the box. The phones and the cables are compliant, but the chargers in the box are not.

I do, because I almost always use a 10 foot (3 meter) cable. But I have started buying really high quality cables (Anker makes some great ones)

Besides my love for long cables, I know lots of people that use 3rd party cables simply because USB cables often don't last that long. The spring clips wear out, or the plug gets bent. I know some people that go through 3 or 4 cables a year.

Makes sense; so now there's the added problem of getting high quality cables AND a USB C compliant wall charger.

It does sound like USB-C will be much more durable than micro USB. No spring clips right?

Yes, but the roll out so far has been just like when Micro USB started - not tons of fun yet, but hopefully that's worked out quick.

Thank goodness I bought my cable directly from Google. I was close to buying a cheaper one from Amazon.

I brought mine off of swappa. I Google the images of own charger but couldn't tell still. What SHOULD the charger look like that is safe to use?

Oh man. That was bad. Long story short, what should the original charger look like?

The video above has some quick shots of the original chargers. Otherwise there is a charger on the Google store that is acceptable. The 22W, as I recall.

Interesting. Guess using non Nexus cords with non Nexus chargers might be the better choice if you need something that doesn't come in the box.
