My husband and I have the optimus s. I got the update notification this morning. His phone still has not notified him. When checking for the software upgrade manually, it says his current version of 2.2.1 is up to date. Is there a way to manually push the update?

no worry, he will be the next. there are some holes there so people can get free wifi hotspot. sprint will block it for their own interest sooner or later.

I wish I didn't update it.

That's upsetting. I used my hotspot all the time. Anyone know if this will available again? I don't want to pay Sprint for this, it is ridiculous.

I got the update last night. I updated OTA and hotspot doesn't work. I had access with my extended control widget. When I turn it on, my phone tries and then tells me network not available. I never really used it but I can see how many would be disappointed. It was just a novelty for me.

A third option would be to download the LG usb drivers onto your pc (from what I hear this does not work for a MAC) and use EasyTether. You pay a $10 one-time fee for the app but it does work very well.

That's a great option, and is better for battery cause the phone is charging while it's plugged into the PC. But as you mentioned there are some limitations involved which is why i think wireless tethering is such a big hit.

For wired:
1) Must be a windows machine. Mac and linux not supported.
2) Must be admin of the machine. Thats fine for personal PC's but keep in mind almost every PC used in a corporation, the user is not an admin. That means that even though it's windows, they don't have the permissions necessary to install the required drivers.
3) With the exploding popularity of tablets, which don't have USB ports for the most part and even if they do they are android so theres no drivers, wired tethering won't work.

With the limitations listed above, that eliminates a lot of people from even considering wired tethering. #3 would eliminate me. The only reason i tether is my nook color. Highly suggest anyone looking into tablets to consider the NC BTW. $250, rooted, running froyo, OC'ed to 1.1ghz, full flash support :p

Agree with your points. However Easytether does work with Mac and Linux.

Once the phone notifies me of the system update, how do I permanenty prevent its installation and repeated pop=up notifications of its presence?

I think I remember that I have to find the .zip file on the memory card and rename it or delete it? can someone verify?

I didn't know that. I could have sworn I read a post somewhere written by a MAC user who said EasyTether didn't work. Learn something new every day! :)

I like the convenience of wireless tether myself. As for needing internet service for work...they can pay for it. ;)
