With a possible update coming soon from verizon to fix a few issues, Im sure a lot of "new to rooting" people here will be wondering the same.........What is needed to safely install an update from verizon?

Do we need to unfreeze the bloat?
Do we need to unroot and reroot after installing?
What if we are running a Rom as well?
What if you did a nandroid backup? can you restore to original settings, do the update and then restore the backup?

some advice would be great

I agree I do know the bloat has to be unfrozen our you won't get the update if you don't. This is why we freeze not delete. I don't think it matters if your rooted our not you will still get the update but don't quote me on it.

As stated, definitely thaw any frozen apps and remove any ROMs you may be running. Any nandroid backup cannot be re-applied because it would wipe out the update you just did. Personally, I will go ahead and un-root, though that may not be needed. However, before you go this route, wait a few days and see what people are saying about the update. My guess is the update will include a patch to the whole found that allows root. A new root avenue will likely be found, but nothing is certain. Also, the developers that work on ROMs will typically find ways to incorporate any new fixes into the rooted ROMs that exist.

You will get the update if you are rooted but if you let it install it could very well brick your phone based on other forums and phones.

so basically:
- thaw all frozen apps
- unroot
- update

....all nandroid backups will be useless?

Seriously. Once rooted I would just wait for a dev to debloat and deox the current rom rather than install an update. Or better yet get the current release from rootz and install that or a custom Rom if you don't want to lose root. I'll see if i can find a link.

Check this version out.

if it's anything like the evo. any updates will download but won't install. becuase of root.

therefor you never want to accept updates.

you will also lose root so it's best to wait on the devs to exploit the new lockouts.

i hope the procedure works bestter then the evo though. i'd prefer to do an upate and reapply root rather then downloading the newly rooted updates on sdcard and reloading the phone OS.

Moosc is correct. Wait to download the update (when it's available) until root is confirmed if you want to keep root. You can always download the zip and flash it yourself but I'd FXZ first.

Also if u DL the update you can't fastboot back to original software because new radio is included. And fastboot file doesn't have it. This only reason y I haven't flashed the update yet

essentially, if you do a fastboot you'll go back to the old version (without the radio)?

what kind of file is the one you download? FXZ? shouldnt you be able to flash that if something should go wrong?

No if I was to load that file. I would not be able to go back. The new update has new baseband. The fastboot file we are using isn't the full sbf just a modified version. Can't flash back. Also the newest update hasn't been rooted yet. The file I have is the current leaked update. I can flash but id not have root. But it may not be the one vzw release since Nov is 4weeks away.

ok now I'm confused. I was considering rooting (never done before, still bit of android newbie) but after reading some more now I'm not sure. Can't get OTA updates, patches, fixes, etc. What are the advantages of rooting? Haven't seen that it helps with battery life or streamlines the device all that much (yes I see the advantage to at least freezing the VZW crap that is all over the app drawer)...

Plus I still haven't seen any posts on how to unroot using a Mac. Don't want to do this on my work laptop, just because.

help, please.

To get back to complete stock out of box is to use rsdlite. Load phone into fastboot, connect to comp and flash fxz file... but as said before hold out as long as possible. Due to root problems. A new radio flash is something I've been waiting for...
