Qi Charging Compatibility

So I've been testing my Droid Turbo 2 (black pebble grain leather back) with several Qi chargers I've used in the past with Nexus 4 and 5 phones. My conclusion is either the Qi "standard" isn't very consistent or the Turbo 2 isn't very compatible with the Qi standard.

So far the Turbo 2 only works with one of my Qi models, the Verizon-branded LG WP-700 (the one with the truly annoying beep every time you set it down on the pad or it starts charging again after hitting 100% and then dropping down). The Turbo 2 won't charge at all with my Nokia Wireless Charging plate (DT-900), or the original Nexus "ball" wireless charger, or the Nexus 5 wireless charger "square". It doesn't register any of those at all. By contrast, my Blackberry Priv will charge on all of these devices except the square Nexus magnetic charger.

I'm curious what other folks success rates have been like. I've ordered an Anker wireless "puck" from Amazon so I'll have that to try out in a couple of days. I've decided to retire the LG 700 pad because it beeps loudly about every 15 minutes with either the Droid or Priv on it (funny, I don't ever remember it doing that with the Nexus phones). I've tried different AC usb adapters with the various Nexus chargers as I'm wondering if its an amperage thing with the Turbo 2, maybe it has a higher power requirement than the Priv? The LG pad has it's own special power adapter (works with Turbo 2), but so does the Nokia charging plate (doesn't work with Turbo 2). I'm just using 2 amp usb chargers with the Nexus ones.

I use the Verizon stand Qi charger. It works fine with my DT2 Leather back phone but when I put the phone in the Verizon shell case it wont charge. Kinda sucks because my DT1 charged in the Seidio Dilex case I had on it with no problems.

For some testing I placed the DT2 shell case between the charger and my DT1 and it started charging the DT1. So for some reason it wont charge with that case on the DT2.

Works fine with the tech21 case and my $22 Itian charger from amazon

First things first. The T2 charging coil is dual-mode compatible. That means that the engineers at Motorola probably had to play the see-saw game between the WPC/Qi standard and the PMA/A4WP standard. From what I know, this means that the coil inductance is lower than what is on most Qi compatible phones. FYI, Qi favors higher inductance coils.

The coil size itself, relative to the size of the phone, is pathetically small, which exacerbates the problem.

1. DT-900: Should work. It is in the arsenal of Qi chargers that the WPC uses to run interoperability.
2. Nexus "ball": Should work too. Are you aligning coil to coil or center of phone?
3. I've seen the Nexus "square", and if I am not mistaken, it is not Qi compliant. Does it have the Qi logo on it?

Final question: I assume you're not using a case?

Coil positioning between T1 and T2 is different :)

No case (I hate them, that's why I got a Droid Turbo 2 :) )

Seems like a lot of other people have the Turbo 2 working with the Nokia plate, so maybe there's something wrong with my phone. I've tried moving the phone all over the nokia and can't get it to register the charger at all.

I took a look at the markings on the Nexus 4 charger (the ball) and the Nexus charging plate - neither of them have a Qi logo on them, interestingly enough.

We'll see what happens with the Anker charging plate tomorrow.

I assume your turbo charging works?

I picked up a tylt Qi charger today and it charges my T2 with the case on it just fine. The Verizon charger must be a little less coil output?

The Verizon stand is very touchy. The charger IC between the two chargers is different, as is where the T2 coil falls on the charge coils, so I would think the behavior would be different.

It's good that it's working with a case either way. Did you call customer care about the Verizon stand charger issues?

No I didn't call about the Verizon one. I have had that stand since I bought the T1 last year. I'll be moving that along to a friend to use with her T1. I actually like the viewing angle of the tylt a little better.

Edit: Ok I was just messing around with the Verizon charger and I did get it to start charging with the case on the T2. It must just be a coil alignment issue. It seems to work when the phone is horizontal on the charger.

yeah it'll probably work better with your friend's T1
.

So just to close the loop, I received my Anker PowerPort Qi (a 1 coil charger) from Amazon today and it works perfectly with the Droid Turbo 2, both with a Qualcomm Quickcharge 2.0 usb power adapter and a 1 amp iPhone charger (just wanted to see if the phone would register the pad with a lower power input).

Still not sure why the DT2 won't work with my Nokia pad, but I'll just use it with the Priv which seems perfectly happy with it.
