It's because Netflix is more worried about DRM than their users. Streaming video works just fine on the Evo/Dinc/Desire/N1.

Don't believe for a minute that's it's a hardware issue, because it's not.

I could care the less, I watch movies on my 42inch Sony bravia!

sent from my Evo 4g using tapatalk pro
I hear ya, I watch movies on my 55 inch toshiba lcd flat screen, why the hell would I ever want to watch a movie on a phone. Lol. I don't get it. If I absolutely feel this need to cozy up to my eVo and watch a movie, blockbuster will be just fine.

While I don't think I'd use the app a whole lot, I think it would be a great addition to extend the value of my Netflix subscription, as I could see some instances where it would come in handy.

However I wouldn't pay for another service just to access it.

They are doing that as a plan to sell new phones. Look at it like this the Evo has the same features as the new phone that are coming accept for dual-core. they know we've been waiting for the app for the past few months now they got us all worked up when it came out for the cry-phone and then they said it was coming for Android. so much time had past they just kept pushing it back saying oh its coming or we are still working on it then the last statement was only a few of the phones that's out now the app will work for. Now after the all talk of the dual-core they said hey lets help sell more phone by saying the current snapdragons can't handle the app you need a new phone smdh. Pretty much that's all their saying is to go out and pay 600 - 700 for a new phone.

Well, technically, to qualify that statement.... it's not a hardware where the device is incapable of streaming. It's a hardware issue to support the DRM requirements. Netflix will not certify the already released snapdragon processors.

Well, think for a minute.

  • Netflix uses microsot's silverlight online and via xbox.
  • They are constantly dragging thier feet and sputtering half-witted excuses on an android app, yet they rushed one out for microjunk phones.
  • Microsnot views Android with the same contempt they have for Linux.
  • And now Netflix claims they "might" develop an app for dual core CPU Android phone.

Is it just me or does 1+1 = 2 ???

Ok, this isn't for everyone, but I am streaming Netflix right now....and just got done watching Fringe on Hulu (regular Hulu, not Hulu +).

You need the following:
  • The PlayOn App (search for it in the market)...it's free and just came out a few days ago.
  • PlayOn software running on your home PC

The software comes with a 14 day trial, but after that, it's a bit expensive (which is why it's not for everyone). It's $79.99 for a lifetime license, or you can pay annually ($39.99 for the first year, $19.99/year after that).

I have been using PlayOn for a year or two now to stream Hulu and stuff to my PS3 so I can watch it on my TV, but now it works for the phone too, which is awesome. It's not quite as nice as a native app would be, but it does work.

So anyways, PlayOn is a media server, so you have to have it on your PC at home and the PC has to be on (it's similar to something like Tversity). It does the heavy lifting of transcoding the audio/video and then sends it to your phone (or another device). The first time you use the app, you have to be on your home network to pair up the app with the software, but after that it works fine over 3G/4G or wifi (I was using it on 3G yesterday and was surprised how well it worked).

After you sync it up, you just start the app, and you'll see your server. Click on that, and you'll see a whole bunch of options:

  • Hulu
  • Netflix
  • CBS
  • Comedy Central
  • TV.com
  • TBS
  • OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network)
  • Syfy
  • Adult Swim
  • Spike TV
  • ESPN
  • ESPN3
  • NFL Game Rewind
  • MLB
  • NHL
  • CNN
  • Fox News
  • PBS
  • PBS Kids
  • Nick
  • Cartoon Network
  • Amazon VOD
  • YouTube (but of course the native app would be better)
  • MTV
  • BET
  • Vevo
  • And a ton more....

Obviously you will need a Netflix membership or Amazon VOD account to enjoy those (there are places in the software to put in your credentials).

Some more info here: PlayOn no longer in beta, now ready to deliver content to your Android device | Android Central

And here's the official site: | PlayOn | Watch Hulu, CBS.com, MLB.tv, Netflix, and more on your TV with PlayOn!

Anyways, I am enjoying it immensely right now. My Netflix movies is overs, so I'm watching last night's Family Guy on Hulu right now.

Anyways, I highly suggest trying out the trial. I have been told that if you sign up for the mailing list, they send out deals to get the first year for $5 or something (although I had already bought it awhile ago, so not sure how true that is).

Not everyone lives in front of their TV. I spend a dozen hours or more every week in airports or elsewhere where it's nice to be able to watch a quick show or movie. And of course now my kid can enjoy watching something during long car rides.

Regardless, I'm enjoying it. As I said, it's not for everyone, but hey, if you want Hulu or Netflix on your phone, it's about the only option that I know of at the moment, so don't shoot the messenger. Given the number of "I want a Netflix app" threads around (including this one where it's been confirmed no app for the EVO) combined with recent news regarding there might not be one for other existing devices, I figured people would be interested.

So don't use it if you're not interested. Meanwhile I am enjoying Netflix movies and Hulu and other sources. Yeah, I wish there was going to be a native app, but looks like there isn't going to be, so this will fit me nicely.

I can't believe I can get Netflix on my 2nd generation iPod Touch, but not on my EVO's big beautiful screen. I work at night, 12 hour shifts, and Netflix helps the night go by. I don't always want to lug out my 15" laptop. Also, I want to be able to use it with 3G, as well as wifi. My Virgin Mobile WiFi works wonders when I need it though. I would love to get Netflix on my rooted Nook Color ! God I love that thing now !! Still afraid to root my EVO. All I want is forced roaming damn it !!

It's not necessarily a question of certification on already released snapdragon processors - it's quite possible that the additional DRM instruction set isn't supportable on the current snapdragon CPUs.

you can stream netflix and hulu on your Evo if you're willing to get up PlayOn. It's not very difficult and it kicks a lot of ass. My only gripe with it is that it doesn't handle multitasking at all. You close out of playon and you have to go back through all the menus again, clearly a quick port from iPhone. I'm sure that will get fixed though.
