i'll just get right to it.
when i leave for work in the morning. i set the toggles for Wi-Fi and Auto Sync to OFF. my workplace has no Wi-Fi so i'm on network data all day so i turn off auto sync to avoid any unnecessary data drain.
but today as i was going through the general sync settings and saw another setting called "Background Data" which makes applications sync, send and recieve data at anytime.
my question is if i want to avoid any unnecessary data drain should both Auto Sync AND Background data be unchecked?
and if both are unchecked does that mean apps will only use data if i manually go into the app and refresh?

thanks in advance

You can disable the 'Mobile Network' in Settings>Wireless & Networks. This will cut you off from the internet. You can even put a widget/shortcut on one of your home screens to toggle it on and off. Very useful

ah yeah i know which one your talking about. i have the widget on one of my screens and turn off data when i have wifi.
but the thing is when i'm off wifi i wanna be able to just access the internet without having to toggle it on/off all the time (if that makes sense). but that's just me being nitpicky.
but i could do that. it's only a button press away and it could probably save me a few MBs. :P

switching on/off mobile network will save some KBs maybe and more importantly some battery

yeah i tried it at work today.
i only turned data on when i wanted to check my emails/facebook/newsfeeds
turned it off afterwards.
i used about 40MBs of data in about 10 hours. and saw a small improvement in battery life. by the end of the work day i still had 60% battery left, and that's 10 hours after unplugging it from the charger :)

With juice defender I can go 10 hours and only use 20%...it keeps mobile data off so nothing can use it and turns it on every 2 hours so gmail can sync

Sent from my Inspire 4G

wow thats really good.
i've heard a lot about juice defender. i'm thinking about trying it out. but so far with my usage i can get a full days worth of charge. maybe once i get more apps and start becoming more of a heavy user i'll get it.
