Question about Chromebook "Desktop"

Just picked up a Samsung Chromebook 2 and, so far (had it less than a day), I'm loving it!

However, I'm a little confused on one thing (at least).

I appear to have a vast piece of desktop real estate...that I can't do anything with.

I can choose a pretty wallpaper to stare at when I have no open apps but, when I try to drag an icon, make a shortcut, or whatever, nothing happens.

What am I missing?

I've got 4 little icons down in the lower-left corner (plus the "Start Menu" button (yeah, yeah, I know, it's NOT s Start menu but, you know what I mean)...and that's it. The entire rest of the screen is completely blank (other than the wallpaper picture) and, as far as I can tell, must stay that way?

Can I put shortcuts somewhere on it? Can I install widgets (weather, news ticker, etc.)?

The store I bought it from (Microcenter) doesn't keep them on display so, I've literally never seen one run until I bought this one, got it home, and turned it on.

This is where a Chromebook/Chromebox differs from Windows. To the best of my knowledge, nothing can be added to the desktop. Your bar at the bottom can have other things added to it. You drag them from the Start menu to the bar.

Whenever I fire up my Chrome device, I go straight into whatever I need to do. I rarely stay on the desktop.

Yep, nothing goes on the desktop--that's just a background. Everything is done within Chrome.

Thanks guys!

I appreciate the confirmation that I'm not completely crazy (or totally dumb.)

It's a quirk of the OS to get used to, but overall, it's a really good OS to run with. Lately, I have been turning on my Linux PC more and more, but I also just built it, too. So the 'Oooo...shiny' phase hasn't quite worn off yet...lol
