Question about data usage

So I just got a Google Pixel 2 yesterday. I only have 500 mb on my data plan (which I probably could change to a little higher if I choose to keep it but since it's not under my control right now I can't) and after a day and a half of fairly light usage I got a text message that said I was 10 mb under my limit.

How is it that this happened when I spent maybe less than an hour using my Cellular Data on the internet and downloaded just two apps from Google Play? It says I accrued 242 mb, which if it was in 2 days I don't think that's even close to right.

It's a great phone, btw, just can't understand how I used so much data while using not much. I can turn off Cellular Data when I'm on WiFi and will not be using the Verizon network too too much outside of the very basics (which is on an unlimited plan) but this scared me.

500mb is TIGHT! Incredible if you can keep your usage that low.

Regarding the issue, Have you checked your apps under Mobile Data Usage to see where it's going?

Ok, I think I answered my own question of what I'm going to do to fix it. I probably shouldn't have downloaded anything at all on the Verizon network since I have a wireless network so that is my dumb mistake. The phone's usage outside of the basic talk and text would be for very occasional internet use when I'm off the grid (wireless wise) and to play games, which I can download on wireless now that I realized my mistake which shouldn't take any of the data.

I just need to turn the background stuff off and it shouldn't be an issue.

When you get a new phone you need to do lots of updating, and it is best to be connected to WiFi for that.

Ensure an app isn't running wild. A phone is a phone -- one phone won't simply use more data then another by doing the same tasks. Something else has to be using it.
