I cant find the answer in the forums, so I will post question here, if it has been covered, then my apologies.

I am looking at defecting from Bberry that has Garmin mobile in it. I am wondering if Fascinate and google maps will give me verbal turn by turn? I know Google Maps on the first moto droid will... will it with fascinate?

it does work very nicely, however, there are two caveats:

1. GPS will chow your battery so you may want a car charger if you intend to use it ala garmin a lot (and who wouldn't?). :)

2. the DJ05 version of the FASN8 has great GPS functionality. The stock/previous version? Yuck. not so much.

I just got the phone and was worried about hearing that the GPS had issues but so far it's been working like a charm. The first thing I did was download Google Navigation. It does provide turn by turn voice directions. The phone does more that a Garmin can too such as provide satellite views. I tried it out on the way home from work and entered in my home address. When I got home it showed a satellite picture of the front of my house. VERY cool if you are going someplace and aren't sure what the house looks like.

GPS on stock worked fine for me, the issue was time to acquire a satellite and lock a signal. Haven't gone to DJ05 yet, so still have that lock issue. Problem is getting the signal, not accuracy of using GPS once lock is made. I've used mine for driving & walking directions using Google Navigation/Maps and it's been spot on. But if you're hoping to navigate to an address 5 minutes away, you'll either get there or be lost until you get a signal and navigation begins.

i dont know what kinda of sat coverage you gys have, but when i was on di01 i was lucky if the gps gto me in the same county!!! it would lock in a couple of seconds, for whatever thats worth. the dj05 is GREAT as far as the gps goes. locks in about 20 secs if that and is crazy accurate, within a meter.

So check me on this... to get dj05 i have to root. Once rooted, I need to install the app to restore should I screw it up, then find dj05 in ROM/Hack and follow directions? Like I said, im a noob.

You may be ok without DJ05. I'm only rooted, and that was to remove the unwanted apps VZW put on there. My GPS works fine. Takes from 30 seconds - a minute and a half to lock, but I can live with it until the fix comes out.

The GPS on my Fascinate works pretty good, but my quirk is that it can't run when I'm not plugged in (external power wise). Sometimes it may take a while for it to find its location. I just restart GPS and Google Maps and it seems to fix it. Majority of the time, it's spot on.

Rooted Samsung Fascinate with Android 2.1-update1, running Launcher Pro and Google Search as default web search provider.

I have Google Maps and VZNavigator. (No root or upgrade.)

Google Maps is more accurate (by far), but I can't hear it through my car's BT.

VZNavigator gets a faster lock and is plenty loud, but it's woefully inaccurate -- has several places I visit off by more than a block.

I find it interesting that some people have such trouble with their GPS and other don't. So far, I've had no problems at all with the GPS locking on or it's accuracy. I can't help but wonder if it's a hardware issue. My Fascinate is only 2 weeks old. Perhaps it's an issue that's been fixed in the newer handsets.

I'm inclined to think my problem isn't hardware, since things work well in one OR the other app. (Sound is fine in VZNav, navigation/GPS is fine in Maps.)

It's very frustrating...

I just went to stock DJ05 tonight and GPS works great now. Locked in around 30 secs on overcast night, indoors. So, in my personal experience, not a hardware issue. With standard issue phone, I had no problems with use of GPS once it locked (while many other stories I've read were way off), my phone just took forever to lock, so trips less than 10 minutes, I would already be at my destination (or, admittedly, lost until I could start navigating). :)
Accuracy once locked wasn't an issue...used it while walking in DC and it was spot on. My big issue was time to lock. Recommend going to DJ05 if you can do it. Read up, ask questions, and good luck.

I had to get mine swapped out recently because of a broken camera flash. The GPS on this new one doesn't seem to work as well as my old one did.

I use google nav as a backup. Since it uses maps off the cloud, the rerouting takes a wee bit longer than navigation apps with offline maps. I have purchased copilot and ndrive.
I am one of the few lucky ones to get my hands on a device that did not have the much talked about gps problems even from the beginning. And after DJ05 upgrade I can even get gps lock in my room.
Having said that, my Ndrive often has trouble locking on to gps initially, while copilot and google nav lock on instantly.
