So I want to buy a phone that my carrier does not have (a Moto Z2 Play). It will be unlocked but still coming from another carrier. Does that mean I'm not going to get updates?

It actually depends.

There are some examples where the update won't get pushed if you don't have that carrier's SIM in the phone.

Is that the norm or is it just once in a while?

Also, if I do have a inactive SIM card for the right carrier, could it work?

Norm or once in awhile? It depends.

As far as I've seen, an inactive SIM would work.

But again, it's kind of case by case.

If you are concerned, I would recommend speaking with your carrier/the carrier from which you are buying the Z2 Play before purchasing the phone; just so you have a general idea of how the updates would work.

I already asked my own whoh said they couldn't guarantee I would be getting them. But I'll try the other carrier :)

Well, I buy unlocked phones direct from Samsung.
You buy locked device from Telstra.
Google releases new software for that device, Samsung has a look, if it works it gets put on the servers and I can download it.
When Telstra gets this same update, they have to test it on their own devices, you have a delay, they find a glitch they send it back to get fixed. The update gets "fixed", gets sent back to Telstra, the testing period starts again. They find another bug. They send it back and so on and so forth. There are always bugs. I invariably get updated well before the locked phones..

Except when carrier phones are getting updates before the unlocked version. See Galaxy S7 in the US.

Ah well, I can't speak for USA but on the telstra forums here (Australia) I'm always ahead of them...

USA works different from the rest of the world in terms of these stuff. Sometimes I'm surprised at the **** they have to put up from their carriers.

Good news! I just got my new phone, put my Sim card in and got the latest update! Thanks everyone!
