Question about overclocking

I'm new to the customization of androids, and i have 2 questions....1 what is the pros and cons of overclocking? 2. whats the best way to overclock a rooted optimus?

I use "Overclock Widget". It is super easy to set up, and has options for clock settings when the screen is on and when the screen is off.

Pros - You can dramatically increase battery life
Cons - If you set it too high, you could potentially damage your phone

I have mine set to max screen off: 400MHz and max screen on: 650MHz

How do you know how much is 650MHz? akk i see is numbers like 122880,320000,600000, etc..
