Question about phone cases.

I've noticed that most people put cases on their phones without any coverage on the actual display. The cases cover only the top, bottom and sides of the phone, without any consideration for the front display. And here is my question:

What do these cases do if you drop your phone on the ground? If it falls on its display - done, as nothing is protecting it. Isn't it a better idea to buy a flip cover case? Or are the above mentioned cases made to somehow cause the phone to land on its sides instead of the display and thus protect it?

Thank you and appreciated.

Most cases have some sort of a lip on the front, either where it clips around, or a more rugged lip designed to be protective. They'll still break if they land squarely on the face, but still won't suffer the same kind of damage (an impact to the side can fracture the glass when the side pushes into the display).
The case I have on my Note 5 now, has a lip all the way around the front, that's about 2mm deep.
I think most people have some sort of screen protector, either a flexible kind, or a tempered glass. Usually those absorb the impacts of a drop (especially the sharp points that would fracture the glass, like a small pebble or stone concentrating the force on a very small area).

I've had the Zagg covers on my older phones, and they would end up with divots that otherwise would have meant a shattered display. I use Tempered glass now, which will shatter, spreading the force out, preventing the underlying display from taking the brunt of the force.

Now, lets flip your example around. I had the HTC M8 and M9, with the dot view case. It was nice, protected the display obviously, but it was a huge pain whenever I wanted to do something with it, and even more of a pain when I went to take pictures with the phone, as either the cover would be covering the camera around the back, or it would be hanging loose and flapping around.

The bigger cases will absorb some of the shock of the fall. If you get an Otterbox case and screen protector combo, however, your phone will be safer against falls due to the extra protection on the display part of the phone.

Skin or shell cases, in my opinion, do not do much to protect against drops or falls.
