Question about Voicemail on new ROM

I have been reading the past few days about rooting and installing new ROMs. After being stock for a year, I think I am ready to do this finally but I have been a little leery about the Sprint voicemail app. Will this be deleted when I install CM7? How can it be reinstalled after if it is? I can't quite filter through all the stuff after reading this stuff for a couple days. The only thing I can find in search results leads me to visual voicemail that is a paid service through Sprint that I do not currently subscribe to, plus I don't really care to read my VM's in a text. I am only concerned with the standard VM. I also see that many people are directed toward Google Voice, which I don't really care to have. Thanks for any help you can provide, Ryan

Edit* Even though I am in the Hero section, someone will probably ask and, yes I have a Hero and it is bone stock..... for a little bit longer

Visual Voicemail will work with a workaround on any AOSP ROM. See this wiki for information on how to get the voicemail app to work once you have flashed an Android 2.2 or 2.3 aosp rom:

Install Sprint Visual Voicemail - ROMRepo

I don't use visual voicemail so I can't help you troubleshoot if you run into problems...if you do, let us know and we'll try and work it out and get you up and running :)

Thanks for the reply! I rooted before my first post, I was just hesitant to do anything until I could find out about VM. I found a thread over at XDA that worked flawlessly. I am now rooted and running CM7 and so far, I couldn't be happier. I am able to upgrade phones now but thought I would give rooting a try and save some money from not getting a new phone. If I can give the Hero new life for a while and save some money to boot, I am all for it.

I used Titanium Backup and backed up everything separately in its own file. I figured since I was new to this whole rooting and ROM-ing I wanted to have each individual thing backed up, that way if I find out after a few days I needed something and there was a work around for it I would already had the file from the old ROM. Probably overkill but I wanted to be safe because I didn't know what would happen. I now have 2 backups of my whole SD card too, one one my computer and one on my external hard drive.

For future reference I found the VM directions here How-To Reinstall Your Sprint Visual VM under CM7!!! - xda-developers
