Do apps and the phone update automatically or do they give you notification when there is an update to an app or your phone?

From what I've gathered, when you launch them they prompt you to update, and you also have the option when installing/updating to select keep updated automatically.

Gotcha, you had to go into the app store on the iPhone to find out if there were updates.

Yep, I normally keep trusted apps on auto update. Click Market > Menu key > My Apps > Click on an app and you should find a check box for "Allow automatic updating". The apps that get automatically updated should have an alert appear in the notification drop down bar when they do update themselves to let you know.

*note: apps set to automatic update will NOT auto-update if the developer changed the permissions on their newest version. You will be required to manually update it.

What about AV software for the phone? Never had to worry about that on the iPhone, is it a good idea to put it on the android device? If so what does everyone recommend?

There are lots of options really...that's both a blessing and a curse. You could spend hours trying out different music players, video players, etc...

Well, Google just rolled out Google Music Beta...that's a place to start. I'm partial to winamp just cause i'm old school and it can do wireless syncing. Doubletwist is supposed to be decent as well, but I haven't used it lately.

Don't forget, you can go to market.android.com on your computer and browse apps on the big screen, when you click download it will shoot it to your phone via the cloud without you having to touch your phone.

Sorry, by AV I mean't Anti-virus, not audio-visual. :-! But thanks on the tip about the market on my laptop. I thought I'd have to connect the phone to it to install, nice to see it's zapped over via cloud.

I use Lookout and happy with it. It also has features to find missing phone via GPS, to sound alarm to help find near you, etc. The free version is useful and the paid version has extra features.

So, heres my question... I'm coming from an iPhone 3gS, been waiting for the SGS2 for quite some time. The device is so NICE. I have a very large itunes media library, mostly music and movies. The music - no problem it syncs wirelessly to the device with doubletwist and airsync, or keis air. The video wont play because its formatted mp4, for the iphone / apple TV. I found several apps on the market that say they play mp4, but i've downloaded 1, and the app actually plays the video, but its playing at like half speed. Does anyone have a good app for playing mp4 video coded in H.264 on the SGS2?

MoboPlayer is the answer people. Lots of digging, but it handles the video like a champ, good interface too. iPhone users with video in itunes, check out Moboplayer on the market.

Thanks.
