I have no idea what format they are since I can't find them anywhere in my phone. I was able to do the same on my Samsung Galaxy S4. Will try PowerAmp

I know it's been a few days, however...
Are you referring to music which you purchased through Google Play Music and have downloaded to your device? If so, then you can only play that music using the Google Play Music app. However, there is a way around this limitation.
On a PC, go to https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...oogle.com/music/listen#/albums&token=d59sOtJi (log in to your Google account if necessary) and locate the music you want to download. Hover the mouse over an item (such as an album cover) and click the three-dot menu which will appear to the right of the album name, then click Download album.
Once you have downloaded all of your purchased music (in mp4 format, if I recall correctly), you can do anything you want to with it: listen to it on your PC, copy it to as many devices as you want, etc., and listen to it using any appropriate music player.
