Question on Contacts Search Not Working

When I search for contacts and the name or company contains...
Appliances
Appliance
Hauling
Lee's Appliance Repair
Free
Junk
Removal
Etc etc etc
Before, no problems finding anyone or company or service
I stopped the app, cleared cache and restarted.

Just to be clear..I can't search for ANY CONTACT, it's information, company , nothing. Search absolutely doesn't work at all.

No change at all.

Any suggestions or explanations of why this changed is appreciated.

Can try clearing data then force stop it

I forced stopped, cleared the cache, the data turned off for a few minutes and restarted.

I don't understand why, but I appreciate y'all's help so much. This helps me more than you can know

I was ALWAYS leary of clearing data. But, that worked. The only thing I have to redo are subs shortcuts to send a text or dial to a few people.

hit a little bump...
I added back three widgets for direct call and direct message (text). They are for three contacts that I contact everyday. When I do this, the search function reverts back to non working.

I deleted the widgets by clearing data and the search works again. I'm not sure what the relationship to the widgets and search function not working could be ?

***B. Diddy... To get to the screen shot attached, I have to hit the volume up button with the power button. If I then hit the power button, or first hit the power button, I get the voice search pop-up. I can't get to the safe mode choice.

When I hold the power button down the screenshot below comes up. If I hold the power button down, it restarts, holding the volume down button does nothing. A search said to wait till the restart initiates and hold the power and bill volume down together. I get a choices screen with a little Android man. But, no safe mode

Try to uninstall the update to the contacts app and don't let the play store automatically update it see if previous version works and test it for a day

Contacts search function does work correctly. Accumulated a little data and cache.

Back to Normal Mode
Updates still removed
Search function not working.
Remove data storage and cache, and contacts search function works again. But, over time, doing other activities with the phone, or with phone just sitting inactive with power on, the search function ceases to function, again.

Since it works in Safe Mode, that would suggest that some 3rd party app is interfering, but it can be challenging to figure out which one. Sometimes you just have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem goes away.

You could try narrowing it down by targeting apps that have Contacts permission.

That makes sense. I had not even considered that.

Since it just started, I'll check any recent apps for contact access and revoke that permission.

First thing.... Thank you Laura Knotek , mustang7757, B Diddy .
EVERYTHING works flawlessly, now. I appreciate your time, effort and consideration to help me. I know about human molecular biology BS, head and neck anatomy and dentistry DDS and pharmacology and pharmacokinetics PharmD.

What I know about computers and phones is desultory and trying to figure out by experimenting. But, critical thinking, with that, requires a knowledge base that I may not have to the broadness and extent that's required. Dead ends can result without help from others who seem to know everything that is required to understand the problem and the fix. That's where all of you exist and thrive.

Rest of the story....
I don't just constantly download and try new apps. It was easy to remember. The other day, I read an article about Signal app.. I really had no practical need for it. I don't know anyone else that uses it I checked and it has access to my contacts. That's understandable. I revoked that and I used my phone all day and repeatedly checked the contacts search function. Perfect. I added back the Google contacts update and, still perfect functioning with search.

I feel confident that app was the problem.

But, I learned several things. I don't remember designating my power button to bring up voice search. Corrected that and been easily get to Safe Mode. And, I can hit the volume button, then the three dots ... And see the expanded volume choices in the attachment.

As with anything, I always learn non associated or useful collateral things, along the way, that I didn't know or needed to know . Next time I have a problem to remember a recent download with permissions can be the problem, a recent app update of a long used app may have a bug and stepping back by uninstalling the update may point out the culprit.
