Question on silent/vibrate mode

Last night I set my S3 on silent by clicking on the sound icon in the settings area on the notification bar. But shortly after that I got a sound notification from an app (new xfinity email). Does it not turn off all sound? If not, how can I do that. I like to do this at work, at night, etc.

I can't say I've tried silent, however, the phone does not seem to adhere to my volume settings at all and its very annoying at work when apps like text msgs and notifications are nice and low, but then the phone rings full volume or taking a screenshot and the camera sound goes off full volume. This is with all sliders set to 1 above vibrate too.

Basic things like the on going LED issues reported here, and this, are reasons why this phone is quickly becoming more hassle than it's worth.

I had this problem. Had the phone on vibrate only and opened angry birds and boom, the background music started blaring.
