Question on Xbox One Controller

I just got an Xbox One wireless controller to play games on my phone. It works great, but I'm a little mystified by something. It uses batteries, so what's the USB-C plug for? If I'm using batteries why would I have to charge it? I'm assuming the USB-C port is for charging.
