Question regarding phones released prior and after Gingerbread

I've been wanting to upgrade to the Droid X once it released. But then I started hearing all these rumors about Android 3.0(AKA Gingerbread) being released in the fall. My question, if I bought my Droid X once it releases, will it still get the screen resolution upgrade through Gingerbread? I just find it kind of implausible that a firmware update would upgrade something that would be normally hardware related. Or would I have to wait to buy the Droid X until AFTER Gingerbread releases?

Screen resolution is hardware based. What we've heard about Gingerbread is "support for" that new resolution. That means just that, "support for". Meaning any new hardware can go up to that new specification.

The Droid X's current screen resolution will remain what it is throughout the products lifetime.

You're kind of contradicting yourself, or wording it so that it sounds like it. Can you be more specific?

By ?new hardware?, do you mean the newest phones like the Incredible, EVO 4G and Droid X? Or do you mean new phones released in the future?

By “new hardware” he means phones that have yet to be released.

A phone's resolution is dependent on the screen it was built around. The resolution that your phone has now, will be the resolution that it will always have. An OS upgrade will not improve that.

The only way to increase your screen's resolution is to allow Steve Jobs to lay his hands on top of it.
