I saw this today when the cover was off. It doesnt have to do with the battery i dont believe becuase the phone still works when its off. The phone didnt come up with any notifications either. There are conectors that match them on the phone as well. Any ideas gentlemen and ladies?

My guess is the S Pen uses NFC. That is why the pen requires no battery.

From what I have read on other blogs, it appears to be part of the antenna system. Whether it is for the LTE system or NFC, I don't think that information has been widely distributed yet.

I bought one of the folio cases when I bought my Note, and it is present on that also, as it replaces the back cover when installed.

but the s pen works without the back on...hmmm.
Good point. I thought the back has an rfid-like tag that can be read by another phone's near field. I was only guessing that the phone powers the pen by the magnetic near field via magnetic induction and communicates using NFC. Only a guess.

I guess we will just have to wait till they do a good tear down of the device, I have seen this on the internatinal version but during the tear down they didnt explain it at all.

NFC has nothing to do with the pen. The screen includes an active digitizer which powers the pen.
