Questions about rooting

Hey guys, I have some questions before I root my HTC One X for the first time. (I'm tired of waiting for JB on ATT haha)

1) Will I have HTC Sense with the viper ROM? (I'm assuming this is the best one if I am only rooting to get version 4.2?)
2) How do I best backup my stock version of my phone (ice cream sandwich) and all my data/settings?
3) What is bootloader?
4) Once I root my phone and upload the ROM, do I need to reinstall all my apps and put all my settings back manually? Are all my texts/pics gone or can I put them back in my phone as well?
5) How long does the whole process take?

Thanks!! Sorry for being such a noob lol

I can't help you with everything and I'm kind of a noob myself,...
1. Yes. It's basically a Sense with a bunch of extra stuff. I noticed when installing it there was an option to not use Sense, but I'm not sure what that does.
4. Your apps should all autmatically load onto your phone once you sign in with your google account. If you are using a custom launcher, you can create a backup of that and they will be right where you left them on the homescreen. You will basically have to put all of your settings back the way they were manually.
Your texts will be gone, but I used sms backup+ which backed them up to my email account. I think it will restore them back to your phone but I chose to just leave them there and have a clean slate. It does SMS as well as MMS.
Pictures and videos should remain on your phone (they did on mine), but anything can happen so it's a good idea to have those backed up somewhere. Using the automatic upload features of Google Plus or dropbox is a good way to do that.
Additionally, you can plug your phone into your computer and simply copy all of the contents onto your PC as an extra layer of backup (this won't backup any of your settings or SMS though)

5. The whole process took me probably about 4 hours total.
The All-in-one toolkit is a good way to go, but it's really easy to miss that there are step by step instructions included which makes the whole process much smoother.
[TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V2.1.1 [2-1-2013] [PERM ROOT][Noob-Proof] - xda-developers (toolkit)
[HOW TO] Unlock bootloader, Root, Flash Custom ROM, Flash Kernel - xda-developers (instructions)
[I don't know why these are posted separately]
There's also a video walkthough in the toolkit but, like the step by step guide, it's kind of buried.

Nikki Emm. Use this link to find ALL the information you need to do it right, remember READ carefully to make sure you understand what you are doing( AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL - xda-developers). Also make sure your phone is the ATT HTC One X. There is a international version also, if you screw up for instance and try to put an international version on a ATT HOX, you will SCREW it up terribly bad.
The process of rooting , flashing and getting other custom roms on your phone is no big problem if you read the links in the link above .If you are on the ATT /Rodgers HTC One X (also known as the Evita, HTC One XL and Rodgers as the Canadian carrier) you can use the All in One Toolkit ( HTC One X > [TOOL] Tegra3 > XDA) to unlock , put in a custom recovery (TWRP) and flash roms , this link given has all the directions to follow. There are several roms each different with there own characteristics , you just have to read and look to find what you want. I would suggest for the first Rom, Viper XL 3.2.5 or the latest version(. [ROM][Mar 5] Team Venom ViperXL 3.2.6 Jelly Bean | Venom Tweaks | OTA Updates - xda-developers) . Another would be "Clean Rom" ([ROM][11/18] - CleanROM 5.1 -★| When Performance and Stability are not Optional! |★- - xda-developers). REMEMBER, always choose the rom for your version of phone or things will get out of control. One the XDA forum there is a Q/A section which gives all the information needed to successfully unlock, S-OFF, flash recovery, roms ,relock, and explain what all this terminology is and how to do it.
Flash and have fun.
I might add , the pic is the "bootloader" screen , this is where you start with the rooting and getting started. If you will use the All in one Toolkit, it will take you there using the directions given on the link above. Without the toolkit, by powering off the device , then holding the volume down button and holding the power button at the same time, after a few seconds the 3 light buttons at the bottom will flash, when they stop, continue holding the volume down button and release the power button , another few seconds the bootloader screen will come up. You can scroll up and down the list but DO NOT PUSH the power button in other than reboot. Terrible things will result. Download the AOI toolkit and follow the directions from there starting on the left side and working to the right boxes. You must be in unlocked to flash the TWRP recovery and continue to get a rom of your choice on the phone. Viper XL has a installer used in recovery which does not need to be boot img. flashed which makes it simple to install for a noobie.
