Questions before I buy

I'm looking at getting an M8, but there are a few questions I haven't been able to find find a good answer to.

First off, Unlocked vs Developer editions. I honestly can't find a good list of differences. I'm interested in developing apps, so that's why the 'developer' edition catches my eye, but what does it actually give over the unlocked edition? Answered.

Also while I like the idea of unlocked phones, I'm vaguely aware that in the US wireless technical standards are wonky and there can be some oddities with 'unlocked' phones not always getting everything on a given carrier's network but I'm not very educated as to the specifics of all that. I'd love to learn (any links to get started would be appreciated) but my main question is if there will be any problems with service on Verizon, as they're the only carrier with decent service where I live. This will also be my first unlocked phone, so is there anything in general I should know about getting an unlocked phone as opposed to a carrier-specific one?

Lastly, I'm not in a rush to buy so are their any upcoming features or models or anything coming out soon-ish that might be worth holding out for?

If you're interested in developing apps, buy a nexus. Period.

A Nexus is out of the question. From what I've read it won't work on Verizon's network (as I said in the OP, they're the only decent carrier where I live) and also if you're going to reccomend a different phone, please at least tell me why I should get it.
