Questions before I root

Sorry for another thread on rooting questions..

I found the link for Dime Droid HQ. Looks very detailed as to what I need to do to root.

I am coming to a Dinc from a BB Storm that I have wiped and loaded hybrids several times. Is rooting easier or more steps than the BB.

After i root I want to be able to delete all the Bloatware (as its called here) can that be done by just rooting or is that a kernel for a Rom to do that?

I want to be able to change to a better radio if there is one, after I put a otterbox case on my Dinc i have lost some signal. Again, can that be done by just rooting or is that a kernel or a rom?

I am currently using tether.com to tether my Dinc i have been reading about the wireless tethering does that let me use the wireless hotspot ability for free or is it just like tethering with a usb cable just wirelessly? again does that come with just rooting or is that a kernel or a Rom?

I like the idea of overclocking and underclocking while not being used. I think that is a kernel?

Sorry for all the ?'s just want to have all my ducks in a row before I start!!

Thanks in advance,

After you root you need an app like Titanium backup to remove bloat...only root needed.

Rooting will not necessarily give you a better signal. That's your service provider.

You will have access to wireless tether. Makes your phone a hotspot. Nothing to set up. Just from rooting.

You can overclock/underclock with just rooting and an app like Setcpu.

Wireless tether is an app you can download. There's a thread about it, look there for the link.

Titanium can get rid of bloatware. Custom ROM's generally come without the bloatware as well.

Radio updates are possible. Be very careful with these, though. Radio updates seem to be the leading cause of bricked Incredibles.

You can do a lot with a rooted stock ROM. You can use apps that require root access and mess with a bunch of system files. I would suggest trying custom ROM's eventually - some of them are fantastic.

Great thanks for the info. Also, when i root will i loose any of my data that is on the phone now?

No, you won't lose anything by just rooting. Rooting will only give you superuser access. Also, if I were you, I'd use Unrevoked to Root. Easiest way.

Since you are coming from a blackberry, like I did, I'm sure the loss of Desktop Manager sucks. Especially since you said you tried leaked OS's and hybrids. Rooting is definitely for you. It will allow you to make backups of your info, just like you could on DM, but now they get stored to your SD card, instead of your computer, so you can revert to a saved form anytime. Just be sure that you always make a backup with your recovery and NOT a program like ROM Manager. I've had past issues with it, and have never had a problem with a backup made from the recovery.

Good luck. I do suggest you take some time to read more before playing too much. There are lots of good articles to help you understand all of this without asking questions and waiting for responses on the forums.

Thanks for the info..... when you say make a backup with your recovery is recovery part of the unrevoked or is it a different app?

When you root with Unrevoked, it puts the Clockwork mod recovery on there for you.

For as long as I've had the phone and been rooting, I don't actually know how to boot into recovery without a program or it being built into a Rom.

Easiest way for you is to root with Unrevoked (even easier if you have a Mac) and when it is done, download Rom Manager form the market. The free version is fine...untill your ready to try custom ROMs, and even then your better off loading the rom from your computer to the SD card and then installing. Also, Rom Manager can update to future versions of Clockwork Mod Recovery when they are available.

Anyway, ROM manager has an option to reboot the phone into recovery. Once you are booted into recovery you will see the options to make a backup. This is called a Nandroid backup.

If you use unrevoked, just use the first option, unrevoked 3. Unrevoked forever gives you S-off, but on the Incredible, unrevoked 3 will give you s-off as well, so there is no need. Unrevoked is a tool strickly for HTC phones.

When I see "Sense and No Sense" what is this referring to?

PLEASE read some more. HTC Sense is the user interface that came with your phone. Google creates the android OS. Then the phone makers put their own programing into it to give you what they think is best. HTC Sense works very well with Android, as where Motorola makes motoblur and honestly I think it's crap. I don't like Moto Android phones. Have you tried any other android devices? Go to a VZW store and you will see the differences.

When Rom developers make Roms for your phone, you can usually choose between a "vanilla Rom" or a Sense version. Vanilla is without sense, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). I personally love sense, and I only use Roms with it.

When you get around to it (you know, after reading up on this stuff a bit more), I recommend you try Virtuous and Redemption Rom. They are both sense based, much like stock with necessary improvements. I would go Virtuous first, then Redemption, then anything else. ALWAYS back up first.

Good luck.

This is great information. I am a basic DINC user but rooted last night to hopefully get rid of some bloat and improve my battery life. I installed titanium backup and removed some of the bloat. My question for the group is: What bloat is safe to remove to get maximum battery life? I have uninstalled the Skype, Amazon, and a couple of others that I don't use. What else can I safely remove to improve battery life? I am not comfortable at the moment installing a custom ROM, but as I read and learn, that will probably be next. I love the stock sense UI, so I would probably want something similar. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Bryan

VZ Navigator, Slacker, My Verizon and City ID are safe to remove. I wouldn't remove things like Facebook for HTC Sense or any other apps built in to Sense.

honestly, I don't think the bloat is causing any battery drain, unless you use the apps. If though they are listed as running, they are only "loaded up" and ready to run. If you choose to run them, they will open quickly because they are already loaded in the memory. If you never use them, they don't use any processor cycles therefore, no battery is used on them.

I run virtuous ROM which already has most of the bloat removed. I don't want them on my phone because A) I don't think I will ever use them and B) I think it's B.S. for them to install anything on MY phone I don't want. I pay enough for the phone and monthly service. Don't force that crap on me.

I'm in the same boat as the thread leader is, only I'm even farther behind. I've had my incredible for all of 2 weeks as of today, I came from a storm 2.

I've never rooted, or installed unofficial OS' or anything like that on a phone(unless you count psp). I am fairly tech savvy though and quite confident I can root my phone. What I do need is a website that I can spend the next couple days reading everything I can about rooting, roms, and anything else I can about my phone. Any help is appreciated thanks all.

Alright, so I've searched and read through many different DINC "Root question" threads and even spoke to PVille about it a few times, but I had another question I can't find the answer to... I just chose this thread to add to instead of starting a new one...

Does rooting and/or any of the currently available ROM's address the "Low data space" error? I figured that would have been asked by someone already, but either it hasn't, or my searching skills suck...

Are you referring to the e-mail client memory leak or the occasional market "not enough space" error?

Application Data Space Low error... I only use GMAIL app and don't have any accounts set up in the stock email app...

I have personally never gotten that error, but I have heard of others on CM7 ocasionally get it and a reboot usually fixes it. How many apps are you running?

Not too many... I have about 550MB free of the 750MB for apps, but it's just the HTC bug that they'll never fix... Was just curious if any of the ROM's fix it or not...
