Questions For Devs about ROM building

Greetings all,

I am complete newb at ROM building for Android but have extensive experience with WM ROM building. I have a few questions about ROM building I was hoping for some guidance on. I searched this entire forum but could not find the answers I needed.

I am currently using dsixda's kitchen on Win 7 64 under cygwin. I am using Nick7's Shell ROM as a clean base. I built my first ROM last night and it worked exactly as planned. I basically added a few APKs to test out the kitchen. All went well!

Now I'm ready to learn...

1. How can I aquire my own base? Could I use the back up I made of my stock VD ROM and move it to the kitchen?

2. Are there any tutorials that would help me learn how to modify the look and feel of the ROM? What I am trying to do next is insert a theme and change the default browser to Opera Mini.
