Questions from a brand new Moment owner.

Hey guys! I'm new here.

I'll be getting my moment tomorrow and just had a couple questions after reading and researching the specs/reviews/threads about this phone for nearly a week:

I've called around to see which stores around my area would be doing the CL14 update and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. But since I ordered my phone yesterday, from Sprint's own website, the software has a chance of already being pre-installed, right? I sure hope so!

Also, is there a thread or any documentation that might list off the best apps to get to enhance performance (battery life, task killers, etc) for a new Moment user so I don't waste a buncha time downloading useless ones from the market?

I've read a little bit about some of the home alternative themes and whatnot, and will probably be trying a couple different ones, but also heard that a couple like Open Home and PandaHome could possibly brick your phone? I guess what I'm asking is what are some strong sturdy useful utility apps that I should consider installing on a new phone since the 1.5 OS is basically barebones.

Thanks in advance!

Adam

Hello There!

as for the CL14 being on those phones, yes it will be pre-loaded on it. When I returned mine the first time, it had crappy battery life, but when I got a brand spanking new Moment, it had CL14, I had even asked the rep, but he had no flipping clue what I was talking about, because I sure was not going to be ready to drive up north 30 minutes to get an update for my phone lol

The battery power has improved a lot, from what I've noticed, as for apps.

I am using Automatic Task Killer, I like it because it saves even more battery life, because it kills the programs running on the background like Bejeweled Demo, which is totally uses and you can't remove... and other useless programs.

It's the only program other than Facebook and Txt Speed on my phone.

I did try OpenHome on my Moment, but I noticed it drained my battery much faster and I didn't like the themes either, but that's just me.

I would also like to know what good apps to install lol

I tried Handcent Text for a while. It was great with the features and all, but it really lagged a lot and got on my nerves lol. Definitely go for the barcode scanner. I love playing with it lol. It can be useful when looking for a good price as well.

pandahome is a free theme app . it doesnt drain my phone and it runs pretty smooth many options . with pandahome you can use Openhome & other Home themes.. im currently using the Ipad theme with my own icons and names. battery with cl14 is pretty good just make sure you disable auto sync. manually sync your contacts every few days or so...

1) I've called around to see which stores around my area would be doing the CL14 update and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. But since I ordered my phone yesterday, from Sprint's own website, the software has a chance of already being pre-installed, right? I sure hope so!

2) Also, is there a thread or any documentation that might list off the best apps to get to enhance performance (battery life, task killers, etc) for a new Moment user so I don't waste a buncha time downloading useless ones from the market?

3) I've read a little bit about some of the home alternative themes and whatnot, and will probably be trying a couple different ones, but also heard that a couple like Open Home and PandaHome could possibly brick your phone? I guess what I'm asking is what are some strong sturdy useful utility apps that I should consider installing on a new phone since the 1.5 OS is basically barebones.

1) More than likely, yours will come with CL14
2) Battery power is decent - don't always have these on: GPS, WIFI, screen on the highest brightness, and you should be alright. Some people have sworn by task killers, others say they're not needed - it's up to you. I used Advanced Task Killer. Also, some people use Overclock to manage the speed of the processor when the phone is in sleep mode and when it's on. I've been using it, but haven't noticed any significant difference.
3) I don't use an alternative home, so I'm not sure. As for programs...

I'd recommend:
Messaging - Handcent (free)
Browser - Dolphin (free)
Clock/Weather - Weather Widget (paid)
File Manager - ASTRO (free)
Flashlight - MomentFlash (free & uses your camera flash instead of screen)

Other good apps:
Shazam - recognize music
Keyring - saves your "price-saver" cards' barcodes (grocery store, etc)
OI Safe - passwords
Azlink - tethering :)
SNesoid - SNES Emulator to play games

I am about to take the plunge and purchase Two Moments and 1500 min plan. Would somebody please tell me what CL14 is and how would I check to see if it is loaded on the phone. I will be getting the phones at Best Buy.
Thanks

Azlink - tethering :)
This program actually allows you to use your phone to tether your netbook? Even if you don't specifically pay for that feature through sprint? Also does your phone need to be rooted, or any way sprint gets mad at you for this? Just curious, since I would like this feature, but its not a must have.
