Questions on Evo Shift Root

Hello everyone.

I'm a little new to the forums so I thank you in advance for your patience. I recently got the evo shift. My wife has had the original evo for a little over 6 months but Ive always had a problem with touchscreen only keyboards.

Anyway Ive been looking into possibly rooting my shift and have a question: Im really only interested in being able to hide apps(I use my phone for work a lot but love my garden of weeden fake grow room). Is there an easier way to hide my apps without rooting?

Ive done a little extra research on rooting but im not sure I would have use for a lot of the other benefits of it. I have a friend that jailbroke his iphone and has always said he wished he hadnt because he lost access to a lot of the support from apple. Will I have the same loss in functionality.

Again thank you for your help.

While it does void the warranty in most cases, the benefit is that you can unroot if you have a problem that you need to take the phone in for. Also, currently only a temp root exists so a simple reboot of the phone will (should) remove the root and back to original operating state.

There should be no loss in functionality at all, quite the oppostie, you'd gain access to things normally off limits without root.

All I know(which isn't much) from reading about rooting is do not accept any updates to your phone if you think you might want to do it. In time a simple one click permanent root will probably be developed which will allow you to easily root or unroot your phone if you want. But usually with each update a carrier puts out the harder or more involved the rooting becomes. The easiest methods are usually done on a phone that hasn't had any updates done to it.

alright now as a regular user who is honestly really happy with my phone as is what type of things would i be able to do? I somewhat understand custom roms and super user access but like specific apps and things you can only do on a rooted phone

Also if im only rooting to hide apps and its a temp root does that mean evrytime I reboot I would have to rehide all my apps?

Yes your phone does unroot with major updates, however the awesome developers very quickly put out new root packages. Going a week without root is fine. Sometimes its a matter of hours before a new root can be done.Rooting is the best thing you could possibly do to your phone. If you want to use the functionality of your phone, you need to do it. Your apps will remain hidden, you could also delete them permanently using Titanium backup. Which in most cases deleting the stock bloat ware saves battery.

I missed the "meat" of the questions, like jesusice said, if all your wanting to do is hide apps and your happy with the current stock setup, you can do that without root, and with the temp root, it is only temp so nothing you do is perm. I think a launcher (like launcher pro) would be your best option (imo) since hiding the apps you don't want or need is your primary concern.

oh and another thought as well - you can always set up folders on your screens with only those apps that you want to access/need and you would never need to access the apps page and see the "clutter"

I guess I should have elaborated: I install home theaters and security systems for a living and I am constantly using my phone for tech demos and remote viewing like the dish anywhere app. The problem is that same phone has some apps I'd rather not have out in the open when I hand my phone to a customer. So just keeping it off the home screen isnt enough I really want to completely hide it.

Again thanks for the help. Can anyone recommend a step by step guide to root my evo shift? Ive found multiple regular evo guides but im afraid I may get stuck and not know how to adapt it for the shift

Launcher Pro will let you hide apps from your app drawer, not just your home screen. The chances of a customer going digging through your Installed list in the settings of your phone is pretty remote, right?

Now, if you're concerned about a customer accidentally long-pressing the Home key and seeing your recently used apps, that's a different story...but there are still strategies you can use to prevent this without root, although it may entail rebooting your phone before making a service call.
