Just put your finger on the top of screen where 4g and battery symbol are and swipe down.

The S8 is running a different version of 'Samsung experience'

That will at least give a second option.

The note 8 DOES NOT have this ability in the stock launcher. I've had mine for a week. I had to sideload TouchWiz home from Sammobile to get this functionality

you can also turn on the finger print gesture option in advanced features to bring down the notification shade

If you swipe down on your fingerprint sensor, it opens the notification bar
