Hi,

Phil told us in a post on September 18th: "The Captivate will cost you $199.99 after contract (no rebate mess, huzzah!), and you can pick it up for $500 off-contract".

My question is: Is this off-contract phone unlocked???

I'm from Brazil and I would like to buy a Galaxy S to use here in my country. The problem is that my current 3G plan runs over 850 and the international version of Galaxy S does not support this frequency. That is why I wanna buy the off-contract At&T Captivate. Do you think it will be ok buying this phone to use here down in Brazil?

Thanks a lot

thanks for your reply gspeed,
I have two more questions:
There is already someone how have rooted this phone?
Suppose I'm able to root this phone, what should I do after? there is a process to unlock it?

Rooting does not equal unlocked. Rooting basically gives you admin level access to the phones directories.

To my knowledge it is not possible to unlock this phone.

I'm looking into the same situation myself. I believe if we root and then install a custom rom we should be able to have the phone be unlocked. Right now I am unaware of the current roms available for captivate. The Capitivate however is from the Galaxy S class of phone which as you know were released worldwide. I believe there may be a rom floating around from an unlocked international perspective. I apologize as I'm not certain to whether or not this would work on the captivate as I have not tried it. Just throwing out potential solutions.

Hang in there we should have an answer soon as I myself am looking for a similar solution.

Again, Thanks people.
One last question. I promise. :-)

Right now that N1 is not being sold anymore in US and, up until now, it is not possible to unlock Captivate. Do you guys know what good unlock Android phone, which 3G network works on 850/2100? I'm going to US in August and I would like to bring one top line android with me. but it must work in this 3G network and be unlocked.

Thanks in advance

Anyone having any luck unlocking the Captivate?

I have one coming in the mail that I will need to unlock for use in Canada.

I had a couple ebay sellers offer to unlock it for me prior to shipping, which lead me to believe it was possible.

Any ideas?

In other threads online (mostly XDA) - no one has found an unlock. Even though there are companies advertising, none are able to unlock yet. This could change any day, but right now no one has an unlocked phone.

What about install Android 2.2 ROM (Home -) in the Captivate? Is it possible? Being the same hardware than Samsung Galaxy S I9000, it sounds reasonable, don't you think? If this work, we have a stock Samsung Galaxy S software running in the Captivate, which is the only one that have 850 3g frequency.
Anyone have done this?

I would not know the correct answer to this. If it were possible thoguh I would keep checking the link I posted above.

That site is for hackers and they are looking for the same situation we are. If this is possible then they would probably know better.

As for now there does not appear to be a resolution. Hopefully something develops within the coming days or weeks ahead.

First of all, the Android 2.2 ROM out there right now is for the Euro Samsung Galaxy S. It's been reported that will not work on the Captivate in its current form. Having said that, I expect it won't take long for someone to make a Captivate version.

Second, flashing a different ROM will not give you an unlocked phone, nor will rooting the phone. Someone will either have to write a piece of software to unlock it, or you will be stuck waiting on someone to get a hold of unlock codes. That means patience for now.

My advice to the OP would be to not buy a Captivate until someone confirms they have been able to unlock one.
