Quick question, closing apps

I can't seem to figure out how to close apps, if I press the home button it will open Google now and or go to the home screen. What am I doing wrong?

Double tap the home button then flick up on the app

It took me a while to learn this trick, and also the way to get to Google Now by holding down the home button. I am sure that it is in the getting started guide, but I wasn't going to read it.
