I plan on rooting a Thunderbolt this weekend using the process posted here: HTC Thunderbolt: Full Update Guide - CyanogenMod Wiki

Is it required to load a custom recovery? I remember it was a pain to apply updates to my rooted DInc because the update did not recognize the ClockworkMod recovery. I only want root to backup all the programs that was backed up using Ti Backup. So can I use this process to root the phone, but retain the stock recovery image?

Thanks for the help.

You should absolutely install CWM. The version you flash through ROM manager once you are done with the Root process has worked flawlessly for me. I also had a DINC and never changed from 2.5.0.5, and never had an issue. You will want to make a nandroid backup of a clean version of the stock ROM anyways, just incase something goes bad. I have yet to restore a backup with CWM 3.0.2.4, but did a full wipe yesterday after I backed up the stock ROM, and flashed MikRoms Perfect Storm, for which I also created a nandroid.

I also had no issues with CWM on my DInc, except whenever Verizon releases a software updated. It was a real pain to find the zip and then try to load it as an update with CWM. I don't plan on flashing any ROMs, so would it be best to keep the stock recovery(so I can still get Verizon updates)?

You can root and leaving everything as it is. The theory is, you can then receive the updates BUT you will lose root if you update this way. There are other programs out there to back up apps without root. It sounds to me like that may be the better way for you.

Good luck

I did a nandroid restore to get back to TPS after flashing another rom. No problems.
