Quick Thoughts On Sense 5

My problem with sense 5 is it seems at least a generation behind touchwiz. The menu bar intrudes into too many apps and makes game play difficult. Lack of settings toggles is mind blowing. No lock screen widgets. At least for now. Many little things add up to a boring and frustrating experience. Nova makes it better but frustrations remain.

I cant disagree more... Touchwiz feels 3 generations behind. All because of lag... S4 is really, really laggy...

I can only compare to stock Android (4.2.2) on my Nexus 7, but I agree that aside from a couple nice additions that came with 4.2.2 (lock screen widgets, quick settings toggles in the notification tray, etc.) I actually kind of like Sense 5 at least as much, if not more, than stock Android. There are a few areas that could use improvement, but overall, it is very polished and user friendly in my opinion. I've played with Touch Wiz a bit on my buddy's Galaxy S3, and on a Galaxy S4 in the store, and from what I've seen of it, it's ok, but I definitely prefer Sense 5.

Having come from a Nexus 4 I agree with the OP. Sense 5 isn't perfect, and while I agree with madlaw that it would be nice to have settings toggles like 4.2.2 that's not a big deal to me, and I don't find it boring or frustrating because it keeps out of my way and flows smoothly (no doubt in part to them having stripped down to the basics, e.g. with animations as the OP mentioned) and I really enjoy working with it. I'm still surprised that I use BlinkFeed every day, but I am, and Zoes are fun and I'm liking them even more now that Google automatically translates them to animated gifs if you use g+.

I think HTC has made an Android skin that mirrors some physical design decisions they made: a minimal look with some simple enhancements over stock Android. It's almost like taste in clothes: one person's sleek is another person's boring, and another person's bright is someone else's garish. :)

It's not. Go to the s4 forums. No more posts about lagging, when 2 weeks ago there were many.

I wish people would stop spreading mis-information based on what they "heard".

I have heard it still is there.

It's not, but it isn't as smooth as Sense 5. There's really no denying that. HTC went a different direction with their UI and really toned it down. Samsung included even more than their previous iteration. It's a tradeoff.

As far as what's lacking in Sense 5, there's plenty, but the groundwork is already done. Battery percentage next to the battery icon, lock screen widgets, quick settings (hopefully in the same vain as stock Android), screen on time in the battery usage screen, taking power saver mode off the notification window and bar, etc. These are things they can -easily- do. I'd even change the battery icon to the same blue they have all over.

If they make even some of these improvements with 4.2.2, it'll be a big deal.

I agree with everything on the list, with the small difference being I'd like to have an option to fit the battery % IN the icon rather than next to it to save space (might as well use all those bright shiny high res pixels), and maybe also color-code the fill color.

To me they're all relatively minor which is why I'm still very happy with it, but if they hit all those points I'll be an extra-extra-happy customer!

When the One was announced, I posted (on another forum) that I hated Sense it felt like iOS. Think about the limitations and features why do we need to open App Drawer to customize the default apps or why can't they include the Controls in Notification Panel?

Little things like this to me make a difference, this is why I'm hoping we get 4.2.2 soon. Thank God for Nova Launcher Prime.

Widget locker works pretty good for lock screen widgets. There are several apps that can get power toggles in the notification bar and look much nicer than the touchwiz implementation. That green Samsung is using just clashes with everything. I still love my gs4 but Samsung has no interest in making their ui consistent, fluid, and eye pleasing. HTC is at the far opposite end of the spectrum. I'm curious to see what a 4.2.2 update holds for the One.

You realize these issues aren't because of Sense, right?

I agree that HTC really stepped up their game with Sense 5 (though I still prefer stock). They just need to communicate that to the general public with marketing.

Well maybe you're right and it's because the one has an outdated version of JB. The settings toggle is sense though.

I'm a serial ROM flasher, with a pretty short attention span. I'm running Sense 5 on my EVO, and it's the only Sense-based ROM that I've ever actually preferred over AOSP.

Quick settings are easily replaced with any number of widgets available on the Play Store. I use Power Toggles myself, although I do like the the 4.2.2 implementation better.

I'm not a fan of lock-screen widgets as implemented by stock 4.2.2 though. I prefer the default way Sense 5 handles the lockscreen - putting a music widget on the lockscreen while playing music, displaying a new text, time and weather is there by default. All without having to scroll side-to-side or whatever.
