QuickKey Buttons - change their behavior?

Is there any way to make the QuickKeys on the keyboard insert a certain character instead of opening apps? I mean, I can easily just use the touch screen to open any app I need to open, and if I like an app enough to make it a QuickKey, chances are it's on my main home screen anyways.

But it'd be nice to have a dedicated Smilie face button or something...

I also have the same question. I would love to have my quick keys perform the same functions as the capacitive buttons on the touchscreen (Back and Home buttons, Menu and Search are already there). Is this possible?

Developers can get at the long-press Search key but nothing else without some pretty deep rooting. Also, this is core functionallity that I am not sure you would want to mess with.

Several of keyboards have options to bring up Smiles almost instantly. For instance it is two taps with SwiftKey keyboard to bring up the most common smiles. See the Keyboards section of the Getting Started with Android - Tips and Tricks.

it sucks there isn't a real handy way to get the smiley menu :( I can't remember if the G1 was this way but it is one of the FEW things driving me nuts with this phone
