Can they improve the signal through updates? My 4g only gets 1 to 2 bars pretty much ever was just wondering if updates would help that at all.

yes. The charge and thunderbolt radios were pretty bad when they first came out and updates helped them greatly. Supposedly 4.1 is being tested and that helps the radio a lot, plus a new radio is also being tested for 4.0.3

He means that the 4.0.3 update may come with a new radio. The radios in a phone are software-based. So a phone update can change the radios to improve signal strength and performance.

Thanks. I had my phone sitting next to my friends droid x and he had 4 bars and I had none was kinda disappointing.

Don't worry about it. The will do so much tweaking and updating of the radios that you will have great signal strength soon. It's not uncommon for us "initial buyers" to end up being beta testers for a Nexus phone. But then again, that's half the fun.
