RAM issue redux (for Phil)

A while back I posted asking how much RAM everyone was using, because mine seemed to be using a lot. Phil and others pointed out that RAM is not an issue in performance anymore because the Nexus has so much and Android does the job of dumping stuff as needed. Fair enough, coming from the Droid and always having performance issues due to low RAM, I was a bit paranoid.

But I have recently been having some performance issues, some lag and delays, even a few redraws of the home screens. I checked the Running Apps in settings and my RAM was down around 80MB left. I manually stopped a handful of processes, got the RAM over 100 MB and everything ran smooth again. Eventually the same thing happened, a lot of performance issues, then it finally rebooted itself.

When it came back from reboot, it seemed to have dumped something or some things pretty significant because now I have well over 300 MB free and everything has run smooth since.

So, it does seem like RAM can still be an issue when it gets low enough for even Android's built-in killer to be unable to dump enough. But it also seems like there was something going on that shouldn't have been which was eating up a LOT of RAM.
