random battery power drops?

Howdy,

I've had the Droid since release, and overall I love it.

However, on two (and only two) occasions, I have gone from nearly full charge to approximately 5% charge in a few minutes, with the thing just sitting in my pocket. I'm not talking about the kind of situation where you're in a basement or something, your phone is looking for a network, and it runs the battery down faster than normal. I'm talking about a nearly instantaneous drop in the battery meter.

When this has happened, I can plug it into a charger and it slowly starts charging. If I power cycle it, instead, it comes up at nearly full power. This makes me think it's more a glitch in the battery meter than an actual problem with the battery losing its charge.

Anyone else see anything like this? It's been rare enough to not be a nuisance. Just curious.

Thanks,
SRV

I haven't had that happen. I've noticed though my battery notification icon ain't the most accurate thing and ill be Dow to like %20 and look like I had over %50.

This recently happened to me also...I put my phone on the charger (it was at 30%) and fell asleep..When I woke up it was at 5% and wouldnt charge at all even tho the charging icon was on. I restarted the phone and it was at 100%

Do you live in a cold part of the country right now? Does it happen after you have come in from outside where it's in the 30's? Cause if your phone is exposed to temps in the 30's for any extended amount of time that will kill the battery.

I just had this happen today. I had 5% after only 8 hours. I couldn't figure it out. After plugging it in for 5 minutes it had 60%. I'm not sure what happened.

Have seen this happen twice on different phones each time (his and hers). No, had not just been outside. First time it was on the charger. Second time it was just sitting there. Just flashed red light, powered up fine. Charger plugged in, showed 5%. Let it sit on the charger a while the first time with no change. Restarted the phone and it showed 100%. Second time, placed it on the charger for a couple of minutes. Then restarted the phone and it showed 60% (close to what it was before the flashing red light). No sure of the cause, but it seems to go to normal after shutting the phone down and turning it back on.

Just curious but have you tried just seeing if the phone corrects itself without power cycling it? Maybe its an OS thing.

This has happened to me twice as well. Thought I was imagining it so I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Its completely random. I'm not "in the cold" and not doing anything out of the ordinary. Once I plug my Droid in to charge the battery meter reads full again immediately and without leaving it on the charger.

Very strange.

Ive experienced this problem a couple of times (with gps on or off). I even had this happen with just two apps installed (Hancent and DX Top), thinking that some of the apps could of been the issue.. and still the battery problem persisted.
Like stated before, I do believe its a 2.0.1 issue.
Lets hope that 2.1 fixes this.

I reported this same phenomenon here about a month or so ago. In my case, I noticed that my signal indicator als said "1x" instead of 3G. My battery level had dropped to about 15%, increased immediately to 60% when I plugged in the charger, and within half an hour was back at 90%, it's original state when the event took place. Hasn't happened since.

when this happens if you do detect it before battery is completely dead check the battery usage stats in the phones settings. That should tell you what is causing it. It could be anything from a left open browser that is in a hung state and constantly refreshing, to cell phoen standby where it's constantly trying to connect to the towers, or gps constantly being run, or just some app that got into a bad state.

I had this happen the other day. According to battery status I had 60% battery with no gps running, and phone on the home screen (Mind you I had been texting for the past 3 or so hours so the 60% battery was expected). I put it to sleep while I did some work. After an hour I went to check my phone and it wouldn't turn on (even when I plugged the power cord in)

After freaking out and taking the battery out, and putting it back in, my droid then turned on and started charging. It had 5% battery it reported, but like 5 minutes later it said it was up to 20%.

I'm definitely not liking the battery percentage reporting. It's times like this I wish it didn't report the time in only 10% intervals.

Mine did this last night. Went to bed I had 40 or 50% remaining. Woke up it was at 5%. No GPS or WIFI on. email sync is on, but i only got like 5 emails overnight. Usually i see a 10% drop overnight.

when i woke up this morning with a dead droid.. before going to sleep i had my droid fully charged and i unplugged it from the charger. this has happened twice now. but this time i had wake up early and unfortunately my droid is my alarm clock so i got to work late... anyone has this similar problem?

After having my phone for about a month had this happen to me this afternoon for the first time. battery was at ~90% then when I looked at it an hour later it was at 5% telling me to put it on the charger. I opened up the battery usage window and it reported the usual things -phone idle, cell standby, display, etc. power cycled and it came back at 80%. weird. After reading the other posts this sounds like a possible bug in the way it monitors and reports the battery status since the actual battery isnt drained.
