ive recently noticed an eye on the status bar next to the 4g symbol.. what the heck is it?

I believe it means Smart Stay is on. It's a feature that tracks your eye movement to determine whether or not you're looking at the phone screen. That way, if you look away for more than a few seconds, it'll go to sleep, but it'll stay awake if you don't touch the phone but continue looking at it.

You are correct, it is smart stay. That being said, I seem to be seeing more and more of these type of threads. I'm really not trying to be rude, just giving a tip, there is a search function on this site that will allow you to search the threads for others with similar questions. Using the tag "eye icon" I found at least 6 threads asking the same question. For future instances, your phone may also have a glossary built in with all icons, possibly under "settings> help" or "settings> about phone."
