Info: unrooted DX (tried rooting and running a custom ROM and still had reboots) / on my 3rd replacement / phone randomly reboots up to 3 times a day / have factory reset at least 10 times / bought original DX 1 year ago.

By looking at the Moto support forums and various other forums this seems to be a Moto issue. I truly do love my DX but the random reboots are getting really old.

My question is what are the odds of verizon giving me a replacement phone (not an upgrade, just a clean swap). I'm not looking to get the latest and greatest phone (that would not be fair and I'm only looking to get a 3G similar spec'ed phone) until I actually use my upgrade so I'm wondering what the odds are that they will replace my DX with an Incredible 2. I'm giving up on Moto at this point...

Last year they let me upgrade my dumphone to a droid x without any early upgrade fees because it was constantly rebooting as well. I've had similar problems with my first x and they just sent me another one. I believe if you get a nice customer service rep or return about 5 devices, they'll either waiver any early upgrade fees or give you a phone with similar specs.
My best advice is to keep getting replacements until one works or they offer you something else.

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

My wife's Motorola Droid Pro had the reboot issue.. After her third replacement device we were able to get a different phone.. but the options are limited to what they offer. We were able to get the HTC Incredible 2 at no cost to us. Although, it was not as easy as that. They did not want to give her a different device.. in fact the tech on the line told her its because of the apps you have installed on the phone. The only app my wife had installed on her phone from the market was facebook and after telling the rep on the phone, she actually tried to convince my wife that facebook app could be the problem. At that point being a little more tech savvy then my wife and finding the reps response ridiculous, I had to pick up the phone and ask for a supervisor. The supervisor was very apologetic and offered her the HTC Incredible 2. So be persistent and ask for a supervisor if the support tech is being difficult. This incident was just a week ago so you should be able to get the same results.

I had been struggling with random reboots for months on my DX, which had subsided a bit with the .602 update, but still was occurring every third day, at least. It was especially prone to occur during extended Nav, Audible or Podcast streaming.

I got a replacement DX on 9/7, for a non-related mechanical headphone connector issue, and the new/refurbished unit has been running steadily for me for 11 days so far, since I last rebooted it myself. That performance has been quite a surprise to me. I'm not totally convinced yet, but encouraged that the replacement seems to have eliminated the problem.

Just a couple of questions if you don't mind.
1. Did you do this at the verizon store or on the phone?
2. Any issues with reboots with the Incredible 2?

Thanks.

I did it over the phone since we had purchased the phone online. So far no problem's with the Incredible 2. We chose the incredible 2 because I have been using HTC's Evo 4G from sprint and have never had reboot problems..

Thanks Edgar: got my DX at BB so I'll try stopping at the store and give it a go ;) Would you say the battery life is similar?

Sorry to keep hounding you...

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

Give the store a try.. You can always call them as the alternative. To be honest I am not sure as I dont use the phone myself and the wife never really pays attention to that stuff. She hardly ever uses the phone for anything.. its usually used to send / receive phone calls and the occasional checking facebook. And since she has a car charger and an extra charger at work, her phone is always charging. If I had to guess I would say that the battery is probably not as good as the Motorola Droid Pro since the Droid pro had a smaller screen.

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

Thanks again Edgar. I'm coming from a DX so the screen is actually larger / maybe the 4in screen will keep the battery life similar.

Take care and thanks.

Good Luck.. Be persistent and don't give in easily.. you should not have to get stuck with a device that's not performing the way it should.

They upgrade a ton of fascinates for similar reasons, some including mine, from a three g to a four.

Be persistant. Tell them it is a known issue and you will not go backwards or keep staying with a phone with those issues.

Just say...it's one of those DroidX hardware problems EVERYONE knows about, including you Mr Verizon CSR wannabe expert, lol

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

Thank you all for the tips :)
One call to 611 is all it took and they literally could not have been nicer and more helpful. Coming from ATT (after I switched to verizon last October) this is a nice surprise how great the custom support/service is.

My Dinc 2 is being overnighted and I wil have it tomorrow! They are even sending me the extended battery!!

I will miss all of you and IMHO you DX users are extremely helpful and this is the best forum area on this site. Take care guys and girls and thanks again...

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

That's really nice of Verizon. I have a Droid X replacement phone and it has a faulty charger (inside the phone) part that the power plug goes into.

My original Droid X was purchased about 14 months ago. Replacement phone is about 8 months old. Am I too late to ask for another replacement?

Thank you,

Katherie

Yeah you are going to be way out of warranty and due for an upgrade anyway. Can't hurt to try, but I think they're going to be tougher on you

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

I'm past my warranty date, and the CSR wouldn't budge about a replacement. That's fine. I'll just wait to see what's happening with the Prime/Galaxy Nexus. What annoyed me, though, was the CSR suggesting that he had never heard about this problem and that a lot of the support techs there have DXs and not reported having the rebooting problem. I suggested that he do a quick search of forums, including this one :D. Ugh!

Re: Random reboots / will verizon let me swap to a different phon

In my earlier post I indicated that my replacement DX didn't have the random reboot problem, which subsequently proved to be wrong. It actually still spontaneously reboots. I've concluded that the problem is probably there on all of the DX's, so I have no confidence another one would cure it.

I have a more serious new issue with the new DX intermittently losing WiFi connectivity while downstreaming data. It may run clean for a few hours of streaming on Netflix, Dish or app downloads, then fail regularly for some period.

I could live with that, except that when it happens, I lose the ability to communicate with the router, even though it shows that the connection is alive and well, and the only way I can recover is to disable and re-enable WiFi. I never experienced that problem with the original DX. I've done everything I can think of to resolve it, under every condition, and I've finally concluded that the DX is the problem, but I dread having to go through the process of convincing them to send me another, and the agony of setting everything up one more time. I plan to upgrade, probably to the Prime in March as soon as I'm eligible, so I don't think I want to jeopardize that by changing to a different model and/or brand right now.
